think you have to put your user in the video group. Its in the recent docs I read, a security "feature" :)

I would look into things like "hal" and "policykit" for possible explanations. The way console privileges are granted is a-changin', and direct rendering is a console privilege. These days xorg hooks into hal, too.

srilliet,

Please post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.
What makes you think you don't have direct rendering ?

i installed conselkit and policy kit updated the hole system added to my group still no change
one other thing i really don't understand is direct rendering runs in root. i added a guest account to see if there was an issue with my home directory no change.

side note the errors in my xlog config is do to my second monitor bing unpluged at this time no change when pluged or un pluged.

Recently, I had a similar problem. (Direct Rendering with nvidia-drivers not available ALSO AS ROOT)
I had a stale symlink pointing to xorg's libGL instead of nvidia's one. I suspect that it is a eselect problem.
I've manually corrected the link and now it works.
1)Find the libGL path used by glxinfo, with ldd.
2)Follow symlinks until you reach the real file, and post all paths :)
It must reference a nvidia file,not a xorg's one.
Example on my pc:
Code:

sigmaii ~ # ldd $(which glxinfo)
        linux-vdso.so.1 =>  (0x00007fffdfdf8000)
        [b]libGL.so.1 => /usr/lib64/xorg/libGL.so.1[/b] (0x00007f5f7d44a000)
        libm.so.6 => /lib/libm.so.6 (0x00007f5f7d148000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x00007f5f7cded000)

        libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x00007f5f7b4b9000)
        /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x00007f5f7d407000)

sigmaii ~ # ls -hl /usr/lib64/xorg/libGL.so.1

sigmaii ~ # ls -hl /usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/lib/libGL.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 26 ago 00:43 /usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/lib/libGL.so -> libGL.so.185.18.14
sigmaii ~ # ls -hl /usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/lib/libGL.so.185.18.14
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 770K 26 ago 00:43 /usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/lib/libGL.so.185.18.14

When I had the problem, /usr/lib64/xorg/libGL.so.1 was a real file, and I have no clue about its origin. qfile didn't help me.

srilliet,

Code:
(**) NVIDIA(0): Option "NvAGP" "0"

You are telling the graphics system not to use the nVidia provided agpgart driver, so its expecting you to provide your own, from the kernel. You don't get 3D acceleration without a agpgart driver of some sort.

Can you test with only a single display setup please.
There used to be issues with nVidia and two or more displays. I don't know if thats fixed yet

Try to:
1)rename /usr/lib/xorg/libGL.so.1 to libGL.so.1.OLD
2)create a symlink /usr/lib/xorg/libGL.so.1 pointing to /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/lib/libGL.so.1
3)terminate X and re-login as user

Maybe there is a better solution, but I think it can work.
Anyone has clues about the cause??
If you want to revert, just delete the symlink and rename the library.

Hrmmm...only works are root eh?

The xorg server searches for the xorg.conf file in slightly different locations depending on whether you are logged in as root or as a user. I've been burned by this before. Check your xorg log file after starting as root...look for this line:

Code:
(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"

Then start X as a normal user and compare...they should be the same.

platojones,

Near the top of the log file is
Code:
(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
which is a dead give away for the xorg.conf in use.

srilliet,

Does
Code:
 ls -l /dev/nvid*
crw-rw---- 1 root video 195,   0 Aug 29 12:37 /dev/nvidia0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 195, 255 Aug 29 12:37 /dev/nvidiactl
get you the same thing as mine, above or do your have the rw- missing for the group ?
or even another group in place of video ?
Either would indicate that your udev rules are in a mess

Is this kind of the same thing as "eselect opengl"?

no the driver was selected using the eselect witch did work for root but not the users. there was a bad simlink to the file for users.

srilliet,

There is something odd there - symlinks are properties of the filesystem. They are user independent.
The permissions on a symlink are never used, only the permissions on the file they point to.

Strangely, this helped me out. I don't know why eselect wasn't being effective. Thanks MassimoM!
