Argh!
Once again, all settled down with an update to the kernel. Things were working smoothly. I then had to reboot for some reason and then, blammo, after going through several reboots without a problem, it has returned.
This is really aggravating. Unfortunately, I doubt combing through differences between kernels will help, especially as I never know whether it's the difference in kernels or some trick that is getting it to work again. There's no consistency at all in this.
