I really can't seem to get the r600 driver working for my Radeon 5700 (Juniper) for some strange reason (been trying since the initial r600 import, but now I really want to get this sorted out). I am now running latest mesa, xf86-video-ati, xorg-server and libdrm and I have tried 3 different kernels (zen-stable, zen-untable, and latest git-sources in the portage tree). I have tried with and without my Xorg, conf, but to no avail.

The firmware seems to be loading, but for some reason Xorg really doesn't like my gallium setup. Any ideas?

I have a Sapphire ati HD5770 and it works very good. I am using mesa-9999 (gallium), xf86-video-ati-9999 (evergreen_accel branch), libdrm-9999. xorg-server-1.8.2, vanilla-sources-2.6.36-rc5, without xorg.conf. Try with this configuration and with this ebuild for xf86-video-ati-9999:

OK, stupid question.

I wanted to try r600g. I used the mesa build from the first post, set the "gallium" USE flag and recompiled.

There is no gallium driver in /usr/lib64/dri.

What am I missing? Do I need the X overlay (I'd rather avoid it).

my original mesa is not updated, get the meas+eselect-mesa from x11-overlay.

OK, I've taken mesa-9999, libdrm-9999 and eselect-mesa-0.0.6 from the x11 overlay and now I have gallium working. I had to change the Mesa ebuild, since it requires a version of libX11 that is not in portage (libX11 in portage is plenty enough). I also needed the libdrm from the overlay, since the use flags changed, and mesa refused to build.

r600g works fine here, but is not as fast as the classic driver. It should reach parity relatively soon, though.

strange, why it needs that?
my mesa ebuild doesn't need libX11.

No idea, but that's why I was avoiding the builds from the x overlay until now -- they tend to depend on really recent experimental packages, and often they are not needed.

Anyway, mesa refused to build with libX11 < 1.3.99, which is not necessary AFAIK.

So, for anyone who wants to try r600g, you will only need libdrm, mesa, eselect-mesa from the overlay. You can take xf86-video-ati from here or from the overlay. You need to remove the dependency on libX11 from the mesa-9999 ebuild, rebuild libdrm, and then you're all set to emerge mesa.

This is where pretty much all the coding is going on now, airlied and jglisse have some time to dedicate to it, and Marek has been making commits there too. It should be shaping up really fast.

KWin effects don't seem to work with it, though. It complains about being too slow. I didn't try disabling checks.

I wanted to try the new r600 driver with XvMC support . I'm already running the r600 driver but haven't been able to update them for a while due to mesa-9999 failing to install (compile worked as far as I could see).

The error message is the following:
Code:
 * ERROR: media-libs/mesa-9999 failed:
 *   failed to copy the glsl compiler.
 *
 * Call stack:
 *     ebuild.sh, line  54:  Called src_install
 *   environment, line 3942:  Called die
 * The specific snippet of code:
 *           cp "${S}"/src/glsl/apps/compile "${D}"/usr/bin/glsl-compile || die "failed to copy the glsl compiler.";

Any ideas?

Thanks.
It seems my x11 overlay had been moved (by layman?) from the overlays directory to /var..
I hadn't noticed that there were problems with syncing it for a while.
Maybe I should sync "manually" more often and not use eix-sync ;)

Edit: New error with mesa-9999

I've been trying to get this working since yesterday. The card is a 5850. Currently have:
mesa-9999
xf86-video-ati-9999
libdrm-9999
xorg-server-1.9.1
gentoo-sources-2.6.36

made sure I had all options specified in the radeon build howto with the xorg wiki. Even so, the not so fun messages:
Code:

[~]  glxinfo | grep OpenGL                                      [omega]
OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on softpipe
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.10-devel
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
OpenGL extensions:

Code:

 [~]  eselect mesa list                                          [omega]
i915 (Intel 915, 945)
i965 (Intel 965, G/Q3x, G/Q4x)
r300 (Radeon R300-R500)
  classic
  gallium *
r600 (Radeon R600-R700)
  classic
  gallium *
sw (Software renderer)
  classic

I cut all the unimportant stuff out of the log.

strange, why it needs that?
my mesa ebuild doesn't need libX11.

My understanding is that it's for indirect rendering; The openGL commands get encapsulated in the X protocol stream via xlib, and sent over the network to the X server. AFAIUI.

To everyone who might be having troubles, read through the radeon wiki just one more time. I skipped over the firmware setup . Feels good to have both my monitors working now. I can't describe how hard it was for me to get school work done with only one when you're so used to having spec files and pdfs open on the second for reference.

I finally got the newest ati drivers emerged and changed mesa from classic to gallium3d.
First observations:
Compiz is able to run in gallium3d now. :D
Xbmc start gives one error and it takes a long time to load but it seems to work so far.

Now I'll just have to find a MPEG2 encoded file to check XvMC. Most of my files are x264 encoded.

Edit:
XvMC seems to work fine. Uptime between 0.04 and 0.08 with fullscreen mplayer playing mpeg2 video from DVD. :)

Okay, been trying to set up a kms framebuffer on my new netbook. It's got a mobile radeon 4225 chip in it. Not having much luck. I followed the framebuffer and radeon wikis, but I'm getting errors in dmesg about the DRM not being able to find the BIOS. Also tried passing video=1366x768 on the kernel command line. All I get is the standard vga console. I'll attach my kernel config and dmesg output, in case anyone wants to look and see if they can spot what I'm doing wrong.

update your lspci database, kernel to 2.6.36 and try again. and make sure you use mesa, libdrm and xf86-video-ati from git (9999 versions)

Updated the database and the kernel to 36. Holding off on the rest until I get the console working. I was really hoping that the kernel update would do the trick, but alas, no go. Same dmesg error.

Just to make sure I get it: The radeon framebuffer driver (CONFIG_FB_RADEON) is for UMS, and should NOT be enabled, right? Instead I should ONLY enable the radeon/KMS stuff under the DRM option, correct?

I haven't been able to find an ebuild for the kernel drm modules, except the nouveau stuff for nvidia. Anyone maintaining one for the KMS/radeon stuff?

The kernel modules are in the kernel tree now, not separate.

Okay, I got the framebuffer working, with some help from #dri-devel on irc. I had to enable CONFIG_PCI_QUIRKS in the kernel. Once I did that, the framebuffer console popped right up. I have direct rendering via gallium on r600 now too.

In case anyone else is having similar problems and searching the forums, my system is a gateway LT3201h, with a Mobility Radeon 4225 integrated video chip.

Thanks for the replies Dag. I didn't know how to update the lspci database before. :D
