When trying to setup my network by installing ndiswrapper, I had the same (similar) problem. :(
If this problem has already been solved, I am sorry for reposting this. Lead me to the answer!

Is this on a new installation, or an existing one? If it is during a new installation, what are you using as an installation medium?

EDIT:

Also, these two lines:

Code:

checking for C compiler default output file name...
configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables

seem very odd. As Mike Hunt asked, please post your emerge --info.

I think you have the wrong settings in your make.conf. Can you post your emerge --info please.

-march=native is for >=gcc-4.2

You should use
Code:
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-march=k8 -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

And you have used the wrong stage3 tarball. This one would be better for you stage3-i686-2008.0.tar.bz2

You need to reformat your partition(s) and start over. :)

Oh how fun. I thought I was almost done with the base install. :(

Should I mark this as solved now, or wait until I get back to this step using the other tarball before marking it as solved?

As soon as you feel that your topic is solved.

Happy compiling. :)

Can I have some kind of explanation to this? I just want to know so I know more about what's going on with my system. Thanks!

Also, what about the mirror variable?

Basically, you're using an ancient image, produced shortly after the Falklands conflict.
The compiler you're using will periodically ask you for punch cards.
etc

You're going to end up unable to build too many things to mention using your existing setup, and of the binaries you successfully build, you're going to find hideous amounts of bloat.

I would be surprised if code which is keyworded as x86 failed on an i486 CHOST. It is not ideal, but it should be nowhere near as bad as characterized above. You can convert from i486 to i686 without reinstalling, though it is a bit messy. If you want to do it, you should do so now, while you do not have much to lose if it goes wrong. See Changing the CHOST variable.

Your processor looks like it might be 64-bit capable. However, switching to 64-bit will definitely require a full reinstall. There are many threads in these forums that discuss the relative merits. I suggest reading a few and making a decision about whether you want to go 64-bit or stay 32-bit. Both sides have vehement proponents and there is some occasional FUD thrown around. Hopefully, this thread can be kept clear to address your immediate problems rather than veering into yet another argument over x86 vs. amd64.

See info gcc for details on -fomit-frame-pointer or just leave it out. It interferes with debugging on x86, so you will need to remove it later if you need to use gdb to backtrace into system libraries.

You need to emerge app-portage/mirrorselect before you can run it.

emerge --oneshot portage:
Code:
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "sys-apps/portage" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- sys-apps/portage-2.2_rc33 (masked by: package.mask, missing keyword)
/usr/portage/profiles/package.mask:
# Zac Medico <zmedico@gentoo.org> (05 Jan 2009)
# Portage 2.2 is masked due to known bugs in the
# package sets and preserve-libs features.

- sys-apps/portage-2.1.6.13 (masked by: missing keyword)
- sys-apps/portage-2.1.6.7 (masked by: missing keyword)
- sys-apps/portage-2.1.4.5 (masked by: missing keyword)

For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

What happened? I didn't have this problem before. Did I miss something?

Try running emerge --sync first, then emerge gentoo-sources

Did you start over by formatting the partition? If so, did you grab the appropriate i686 stage3 tarball? Please post your new emerge --info.

I just changed my post, because I noticed this happened when I did "emerge --oneshot portage," right after doing "emerge --sync"

Yes, I did start over by formatting the partition. Yes, I grabbed the tarball you told me to get.

Normally ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" should already be set by portage. I don't know why you don't have that already. :?

Probably after you finish your installation it will be ok.

Try using
Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" emerge -1av portage

and
Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" emerge gentoo-sources mirrorselect

Should I add that to my make.conf file? Or should I add prepend all of my commands with that? Or is it only necessary for portage and gentoo-sources?

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" emerge -1av portage:
Code:
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Are you in the chroot?

If so please post the output of
Code:
ls -l /etc/make.profile

That seems fine.

When you chrooted, did you run env-update && source /etc/profile :?:

If not then do it now, and try emerge gentoo-sources again.

Does that help?

Maybe it's not.

try eselect profile set 1

or this if you don't have eselect

Code:
rm /etc/make.profile
ln -s /usr/portage/profiles/default/linux /etc/make.profile

Then emerge -1av portage

Yes, I did.

Ok, thanks! So far everything is working amazingly. Now to compile the kernel. I'm not even sure if I compiled it correctly the first time, so if you don't mind, can you please help me with this?

I have a wusb300n wireless card, if possible I would like this to be compiled with the kernel, although ndiswrapper isn't a problem for me. I want to tweak the kernel specifically for my computer. I know nothing about compiling a kernel.
