GNOME: two nautilus/desktop issues

For a while, I have been observing the following behavior that was not there before:

- dragging an icon to my "Home" folder on the desktop does a copy instead of a move
- creating/removing files on the Desktop (e.g. unzipping a tar that is on the Desktop) is not shown. The files are there, but no icons. I have to kill (and auto-restart) nautilus to see them.

Any idea what is going wrong? I'm on a couple of 2.27 packages now, but I have seen this on 2.26 as well.
