Installing xorg-server-1.8.0 from x11 overlay on a new (to me) thinkpad x61s with intel 965GM chipset (x3100). Followed the gentoo wiki, kernel disabled framebuffer drivers, uses i915 KMS driver with KMS enabled by default, xf86-video-intel-2.11 installed.

X fails to start with

Code:
Failed to load module "dri" (module does not exist, 0)
Failed to load module "glx" (module does not exist, 0)
Failed to load module "dri2" (module does not exist, 0)

Code:
dmesg | grep drm

[drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0
[drm] set up 7M of stolen space
[drm] initialized overlay support
fb0: inteldrmfb frame buffer device
[drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0

relevant xorg.conf

Code:
Option "AccelMethod" "UXA"
Driver "intel"

not sure how to proceed diagnosing the problem

Try to remove Option "AccelMethod" "UXA"

Code:

# grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log
# grep VIDEO_CARDS /etc/make.conf

last but not least, exactly which gentoo wiki did you follow?

followed this here http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Intel_GMA along with various other sites which all said basically the same thing.

Code:
Linux virgo 2.6.33-zen1 #2 ZEN SMP PREEMPT Tue Apr 6 07:19:19 EDT 2010 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU L7500 @ 1.60GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Code:
[ 11648.598] (II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
[ 11648.598] (EE) Failed to load module "dri" (module does not exist, 0)
[ 11648.599] (EE) Failed to load module "glx" (module does not exist, 0)
[ 11648.601] (EE) Failed to load module "dri2" (module does not exist, 0)
[ 11648.606] (EE) intel(0): No kernel modesetting driver detected.
[ 11648.606] (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

and VIDEO_CARDS="intel"

I just finished installing this system from stage 3 so its a clean slate. I don't think I forgot to set up anything...

I should probably mention that I compiled xorg-server with udev and not hal. As this is my first foray into udev with gentoo (or any other flavor) I probably don't have udev set up correctly.

EDIT: Never mind, I recompiled with hal and get the same results

Have you enable the KMS in the kernel?

Code:

cruzki@artemisa ~/src/slp $ grep KMS /usr/src/linux/.config
CONFIG_DRM_KMS_HELPER=y
CONFIG_DRM_I915_KMS=y

Yes, as per the gentoo wiki.

EDIT: I recompiled mesa and it would appear that I have a working configure-less KMS setup... except that its crashing with Fatal: Module fbcon not found, which is built in but for some reason X is crashing because it can't find a module for it.

EDIT2: starting x with "X -retro" works, so it must be an issue with configuration somewhere

EDIT3: huh, well after just emerging xterm and twm I can issue startx and get a desktop without issue, fully KMS and without xorg.conf, so I guess I'm good to go!
