If I compile the module for my sound card into the kernel, will that cause problems when I come to use ALSA?

Possibly.. I suggest you just compile in sound support in your kernel and, if you want to have it, support for your sound card as a module. That way you can easily remove it. My opinion is that you might as well go with alsa right away.
This has been discussed before, by the way. There's a nice little Search function you can use to find out more...

soundcore.o will do

so, build sound support as a module, that's all you need for ALSA sound in your kernel config.
ALSA will take care off all the rest, and it will load soundcore.o when started. (/etc/init.d/alsasound start)

Good luck
