Hi you all!
I've got a bit of a Problem here.

I've got a Ati Radeon X1400. I switched to radeonhd a couple o moths ago, because fglrx was a real pain in the $§%!

Everything went great. Last Tuesday i updated the kernel and decided to unmerge ati-drivers.
First i had the problem that gnome-terminal was not working. It was because the libGL.so was missing, so i switched to xorg-x11 opengl and re-emerge the terminal.

After that, i couldn't even start gnome. GDM works, but i can't use the keyboard or mouse.

I googled and found that mesa needs to be re-emerged. I did that and nothind. I compiled the kernel (2.6.29-r5, but with the 2.6.27-r8 it doesn't work either) re-emerged xorg-server, xorg-x11, radeonhd, gtkglarea (from revdep-rebuild), tried ati-drivers (8.55-r2) again and nothing.

I noticed, that the fglrx module does get loaded. Altough i unisntalled ati-drivers and commented out the entry in modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6.

I don't have a clue, what's going on and how to fix it.

Pls, help!

P.s. Here's my Xorg.log:

Did you try putting VIDEO_CARDS="radeonhd" in make.conf and running emerge -pvuDN world?

I had to manually delete all of the fglrx.ko modules (even those that weren't part of the kernel I was running at the time). You can find all of them with something like the following:
Code:
find /lib/modules -name "fglrx.ko"

That should get you past fglrx loading when you don't want it. You'll then need to examine your Xorg log for the next error(s) to solve.

thanks guys for the answers.
i rm fglrx.ko and commented out type1 and freetype in xorg.conf.

the error that still appears is:
(EE) RADEONHD: rhdatomgetddc GPIO_DDC index or something like that. I'm in tty.

I have radeon and radeonhd in make.conf.
I didn't do update world, because it will take mme days tto compile.

You'll need to update mesa and then switch to xorg-x11 opengl after adding radeonhd to your VIDEO_CARDS. Also, check your update world list for other packages that have radeon/radeonhd.

Do you mean how do you list the use flags in make.conf?

Here's the update command I use (aliased due to its length):
Code:
emerge --update --deep --with-bdeps=y --reinstall changed-use --ask --tree --nospinner --verbose world

The verbose switch will show which USE flags are enabled/disabled on each package to be updated. If you see +video_cards_radeon or +video_cards_radeonhd then you need to re-emerge that package.

Thanks!
I did that, but you know, how nowdays updating with gentoo is. I've got a lot of maasked packages, wich are the depency of others, so emerge world fails everytime. Thats why, i do emerge world every 2 years.
Perhaps is there a trick, i don't know about.

I notice in the Xorg.log that it says, AllowEmptyInput is on, so mouse1 and keyboard1 are disabled. Thats very strange, though.

Anyway, i put in my xorg.conf under ServerLayout:
Option "AllowEmptyInput" "off"
Then i tried from my normal user startx, but it didn't work eitehr.
Then, i enabled back gdm and rebooted.

X does start and the mouse and keybord work too. But they went crazy! They're way too fast for me (i'm disabled) and the keyboard behaves really very odd in gnome. E.G. i can't use backspace or del or the multiimedia keys.
I think, it's gnome. But i cannot reemerge it, because of masked packages.

I think the trick is to update world as often as possible. Trying to update world on anything more than a weekly basis will make it difficult. Make sure you have the USE flags dbus and hal set in /etc/make.conf. Then post the output you get from the update world command above so we can help. Posting your 'emerge --info' would also be helpful to make sure nothing else is out of date.

maybe a long shot but can you post your xorg.conf and output of
Code:
eix xorg-server
?

i'll do that as soon as i get my laptop

i fixed it. I googled once more and read that people, with the same problem, said it was because of a broken xorg.conf.
Of course, they only said "I fixed it". But how? They forgot that part.
Then i read in radeonhd wiki, that actually xserver doesn't need xorg, conf upwards version 1.4.
Mine is 1.5.3.
So, i removed the xorg.conf and rebooted.

It did work! I've problems with keyyboard speed (it does not slown down with control panel nor with xset), but it works!
I'm so happy...
Thanks for all.

it still needs xorg.conf, but not for the inputs, that was taken over by hal (assuming you've compiled xorg-serve with the hal flag.)

Like Nerevar implies, this is way too long to go without an update. I usually run intro trouble if I wait too long, so I try to update at least weekly.

hal is enabled.
yeah, you're right!
Like i said, i removed xorg.conf.
It did start, but the keyboard and mouse went nuts. (well, actually the keyboard and mouse were too fast, not nuts)
I could control it only by kbdrate and sometimes that didn't work.
With the time, i notice,it was like, when i boot directly in tty and i've to give in ten times my username and password :-(
So, i run xorgconfig, to start from scrath. I change only to radeonhd and modes.
I gave in xdm restart and it worked flawless! The only problem, the radeonhd doesn't work too well. I played a video with 720p and it was choppy.
So, i change to "ati" and it works.
I don't know, if there's something i'm missing.

Update the whole system, is always so difficult because of the masked packages.

But,you're right.
