You could try copping make and the files it needs (if any) from your install CD.

Well, I did that actually.

I copied all of the portage from both CDs after installation (v1.4) per the optional instructions in the install doc.

I *thought* that the 'emerge -k make' would grab the pre-compiled binary from the portage, thus not needing make to install it.

Alas, no luck.

Any other ideas?

Anyone?

I finally grabbed the /usr/bin/make binary from my old RH6.2 box (what I am trying to migrate from) and was able to do an 'emerge make'.

The /usr/bin/make got replaced, so I guess I worked around it.

I would like to know how I could have gotten out of that scenario using emerge, or if it was impossible.

Me too, but I don't think you could.

Don't feel too bad, from time to time you'll see posts from people who did 'emerge unmerge portage' in this forum.
