Problem with xorg!!

Post by zesssez » Fri May 29, 2009 12:42 am

HI, i will try to be direct.

Graphic chipset of my laptop is semi-broked. Asus a6km turion64 x1...Nvia GeForce 7300. Laptop screen "normally" don´t works, only get lighter more and more and seems burned lika a ghostly image. VGA out works, connected on a tft display acer AL511 15". But works bad, always coloured vertical lines.

I have problems running X with gentoo.....(between others :))

I turn on the laptop, (normally i have to look to the external screen to see something (with vertical coloured lines of course))

.- if i press f2 to run bios, laptop is blocked, keyboard is blocked, only i can do is shutdown pressing 5 sec power button.

.- if i turn esc. to select bott device, works and i can select boot device.

---------------If i select boot from hard drive grub appears-------------------------------------------------

Screen with text "GRUB version xxx ,GRUB Loading please wait" appears fully of fat white dots Horiz. and vert. spaced, after that OS chooser screen appears.

.- if i have GRUB with splashimage (background image) active, i can see quite it good, low resolution, but text is ok.

.- if i have GRUB with splashimage commented with #. OS chooser screen appear very, very badly. I can read one letter yes and one letter no (its a white fat dot,) each line.

.........After that i choose gentoo, and kernel loads (only with vga=791)..........i can see clearly all lines of kernel, modules and system loading
loggin in. OK.
(if i dont use vga=791, after text: Booting the kernel i cant see anything more and never can loggin, and cant use virtual consoles. only 5 secs shutdown.

It seems a Graphical chipset broken, i know, but.,,,sometimes (rare times), laptop screen turns on ¿?, yesterday was one of those times, and i was with laptop screen and external screen running, so i emerge xorg-server (VIDEO_CARDS="vesa fbdev") installed it and X -configure, xorg detects nvidia chip and create for me a xorg.conf, i change to vesa. and startx, Fine X load i can se twm.

I turn off the computer, and turn on again, i loosed laptop screen, only with external screen, GRUB appears and if i now choose gentoo and try startx, get a hanged logo Asus screen and laptop is blocked again, only 5 sec works to shutdown.

.-if i choose windows, XP loads, bad image, vertical coloured lines, but always works (with external screen), no graphical adapater its detected (not available), seems to run under basic VGA mode. 1024x768 32 bits.

I tried several xorg configurations but not results, always Asus logo semiloaded and hanged screen after startx.

Well, i know the answer is to buy a new laptop,,,,, but if i can run Xp, why i cant run X.?
What is the most basic xorg configuration with vesa or fbdev
?

compilation x11 its ok, first time i was able to run X, so not is the problem, i think.

I know its crazy thing, and surely its not the place to question, but, someone knows....what is happening?

i' thinking about set xorg.conf to enable clone vga output, perhaps in Xp is active by default, but with xserver is neede to enable, i mean:

i suppose xp activates clon vga output from the beggining of booting OS, like linux-gentoo, (i can see loading gentoo (text screen on external monitor)

While in xp, vga output still active when graphic interface is loaded (no matters if main screen (laptop) works or not, in xorg.conf i only have one device one monitor configured (laptop screen), perhaps if this main screen crashes no other output works.

Could adding second device, second monitor to xorg.conf help me...?

lets see...

Hi, for what I see, you don't have the X and the hal dbus use flags :

Code: Select all

USE="acl amd64 berkdb bzip2 cli cracklib crypt cups dri fortran gdbm gpm iconv ipv6 isdnlog midi mmx mudflap multilib ncurses nls nptl nptlonly openmp pam pcre perl pppd python readline reflection session spl sse sse2 ssl sysfs tcpd unicode xorg zlib"
So, add them and run this :

Code: Select all

# emerge -auDNv world
After that, start your X session without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Also, you should add this inside your /etc/make.conf

Code: Select all

INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse evdev"
VIDEO_CARDS="vesa fbdev nvidia nv"
Since you have a nvidia card

hi, i have news....
today i have kde running on external screen, i get X this morning and i've installed first fluxbox and after kdebase-startkde, no kdm

i have tried to think about the process to get external screen with X running and laptop no blocked, well...to simplify...

i turned off laptop screen before GRUB,
i botted to get text loggin, and loggin, rm xorg.conf.new from /root, rm xorg.conf from /etc/X11 if exists. xorgconfig (enter manually basic data, kb, mouse VIDEORAM...). startx, boot X fails, (i think xorgconfig generates a xorg.conf en /etc/X11), 5 sec. shutdown and boot again in text mode, loggin like root rm xorg.conf from/etc/X11/ and rm xorg.conf.new from /root. Xorg -configure again, X -config /root/xorg.conf.new, and voila, X starts on external screen.

Idont know what is the reason, but works.....i didnt have turned off the laptop today, while i am wrting this post i take a risk :), and rebooted laptop, before to finish this reply. logged like user. (now, i am remembering that this afternoon i restarted few times X server, and turned on again only with startx...?, but i dont have any xorg.conf on /etc/X11/ and only have one xorg.conf.new, in /root, anyone on /user), so i try first startx, and runs ok.

Now, d2_racing, i dont want to do nothing until you answer me, plz.

PD. i also emerge thightvnc, and works ...i have one question here. after loggin, and not starting X, I can create a virtual X desktop with vncserver, like gentoo:1, and i can connect from my other pc to an X session of laptop., really i have or not the X server running?

Hi, since you can have a X org running, your /etc/X11/xorg.conf was not valid.

Before doing anything else, can you post this :

Code: Select all

# equery list xorg
# emerge -pv xorg-server
Also, did you add this inside your /etc/make.conf :

Code: Select all

INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse evdev"
VIDEO_CARDS="vesa fbdev nvidia nv"
With that, I will be able to guide you to have a valid /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Ok, you use Xorg-Server 1.5 but you use the old method for your /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Also, you need to add this inside your /etc/make.conf

You use flags should have this :

Code: Select all

X hal dbus
Also, you need to run this :

Code: Select all

# emerge -auDNv world

ok, that's like i see it.

there are two things different but interconnected,

one
graphic chipset on ly laptop is broken, laptop screen sometimes works and sometimes no.

two
because the graphic chipset of main board is broken, i cannot select the driver i want to run, in fact, i think only works under vesa or framebuffer

from two days ago I was working with X, but didnt have any xorg.conf, only xorg.conf.new. But just my linux knowledge arrives (i know is small), when you run startx, xorgserver looks for an xorg.conf, if none appears, i thoght xorg crashes, but now i'm thinking that xorgserver try to run by itself, several configurations for a possible xorg, base on your graphic chipset, and basics video drivers, i conclude that looking Xorg.0.old, 3 drivers appear, nv vesa, fbdev.

yesterday i cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/ edit it and change driver vesa to driver fbdev, and startx again and X works fine. i already see coloured vertical lines on external screen, and sometimes on laptop screen too. and now i can change keyboard layout US to ES. To check with another linux installation, like debian32bit on external USB connected to laptop, I also had problems on --X server--external screen in this installation, running through laptop., So a copy xorg.conf from gentoo to debian, changing lib64 to lib on modules loading line. startx on debian works fine too.,sometimes only external screen, sometimes both running.

So now i have X, running with a valid xorg.conf, i cannot get more resolution like 1024x768 76Hz (limit vertrefresh of my external monitor is 75 on datasheet.), and i didnt neet it. In january i was thinking to throw this laptop away, now, THANKS A LOT GENTOO, and d2_racing too, a have a pc, not portable, but an alive pc.

About your screen resolution, if you use the Vesa driver, I'm sure that's normal, because you cannot get any high resolution with that generic driver.
