compiz fusion dont work, ALSA not working in GNOME !

hey dude
am a linux freak.

i used fedora, debian
and ubuntu a lot.

and soon i realized that every 1 mostly use ubuntu and its not "dude" any more.
so i switched to gentoo after hearing some awesome features about it.
but i got some problem.

i installed kde first (i prefer kde 2 gnome) and then ALSA and other packages.
(installed kde using "emerge kdebase-meta" not kde-meta)
most of the software works fine. my sound card works fine, my graphics driver (Geforce 7300) works fine.

and then i emerged compiz and GNOME
tried emerging compiz with all USE flags but it don't work.
then i tried installing compiz by compiling the source code. still it don't work.

and my sound card dosen't work in GNOME !
so i re-emerged alsa with USE flag ="gtk gnome kde" but by sound card dosent work in GNOME.
it starts working when i open kmix in GNOME.

and virtualbox don't work
it shows no kernel module found.
am sure that i installed vbox kernel module


i knew i am doing some mistake in USE flag.

can you help me out?

Hello,

ALSA → Probably your mixer is muted in Gnome which is why you don't hear anything while in KDE you do.

As for the other issues: I have no idea.

when i open gnome-mixer it shous GSTREAM not installed or not working properly!!

one problem i have is that alsamixer likes to enable the digital output thereby making me hear nothing. mute it in alsamixer.

As to the problems:
1. You need to load the modules to use virtualbox. When you installed the modules package, emerge gave you a message as to how to autoload them at boot ;] I think that it's in the handbook for baselayout-1 and if you were to use 2 then it's in the migration documentation. In case you wander, the modules are "vboxdrv" and for recent versions also "vboxnetflt".

2. You should go through your gnome stuff and see what USE flags you're missing, add them either globally in make.conf or localy in /etc/portage/package.use. If you installed Gnome and don't have gstreamer then you are seriously missing USE flags.

3. Get yourself some tools for working with portage:
- eix from app-portage/eix is for quick searching (it's a pretty powerfull tool if you read the man)
- euses from app-portage/euses gives explanations of USE flags (also read the man)
- app-portage/genlop app-portage/gentoolkit and app-portage/portage-utils will also prove helpfull
To see what's inside each package do 'equery files package_name'. If you're just looking for executables, then obviously grep bin out of it.
