PostPosted: Thu Jun 04, 2009 4:41 pm    Post subject: Mathematica crashes using Xorg. 1.5.3-r6 Reply with quote

Hi guys,

sometimes I'm using Mathematica for some purpose. I've still an older version installed (v6).
Since an update to Xorg-server 1.5.3-r6 Mathematica crashes.

Here my console output when i'm starting Mathematica (this comes several times with different numbers):

Quote:

X Error of failed request: RenderBadPicture (invalid Picture parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 154 (RENDER)
Minor opcode of failed request: 7 (RenderFreePicture)
Picture id in failed request: 0x2c00526
Serial number of failed request: 6638
Current serial number in output stream: 6639

When I want to tip something in Mathematica's surface the cursor is moving but the letters are not seen. When I'm clicking on some buttons (i.e. Help) the x-server crashes and I will get an new kdm-login.
Mathematica-fonts are not installed:

I'm not quite sure which log file would be appropriate to show the behaviour of the x system...

Just a shot from the hip: Try from a console
Code:

$ XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 Mathematica

Thank you, but it did not help

Code:

elenor dennis # XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 Mathematica
bash: Mathematica: command not found
elenor dennis # XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 mathematica

OK, that doesn't mean that the trick with the ARGB visuals didn't work, but that the Mathematica shell script isn't in your path.

How do you start Mathematica normally? Do you know to which directory it is installed?

In generally I'm starting mathematica via some console (simply typing mathematica).
Yeah, it is installed in /usr/local/Wolfram/Mathematica/6.0

Ok if I'm typping XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 /usr/local/Wolfram/Mathematica/6.0/Executables/mathematica there is no error messages and a window is popping up which forces me to (re-) enter my mathematica licence.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Hmmm ... I'm a bit surprised that you have to re-enter your license key. Is it possible that you have more then one version of Mathematica installed or the same version installed to different directories? Do you use a license server?

Anyway ... did setting XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 solve your first problem of X crashing and Mathematica rendering an unusable window?

No I couldn't try because I have to wait till Monday to obtain the licence (at work)...
But this computer is a single licence, no licence server, no other Mathematica version installed..
Thank you very much!!!

No need to thank me, until you know if I the trick disabling the ARGB visuals really helped you ;)

Please tell me how it worked out, because I'm really surprised to see that you have to re-license Mathematica. I can't think of any valid reason why setting an X related environment variable could cause this.

Oh shit sorry, it was my fault.
I did it as admin, as user it works without any problems.

But what is this line actually doing?

Fine, good to hear that it solved your problem!

For the meaning of this environment variable see here, section 5.3.
