Ok, me la sono cercata... ho comperato una ATI. Sapevo che erano ostiche per il pinguino, ma credevo che con un chipset un po' datato i drivers fossero consolidati e a me serviva una scheda con il TV-out pci a basso costo, e la ati è una delle pochissime schede pci con questo tipo di uscita.
Si tratta di una Radeon 9200 PCI

Non so perchè venga vista come AGP, il bus è PCI, saranno i pciids registrati come AGP...boh.
La questione è questa, installo xorg-server con gli xf86-ati-drivers, lancio X -configure e la scheda viene vista e configurata, poi all'avvio di X

"Riconosci" manualmente il monitor inserendo l'apposita entry nel file xorg.conf...
Se non ricordo male il programma:

Provo il prima possibile quanto suggerito ma ho dei seri dubbi che funzioni, la scheda sembra fare a botte con DDC e EDID :-/
Ho aperto pure un bug su freedesktop.org perchè per me c'è qualche difetto nel driver della radeon che ha un chipset riconosciuto come agp ma che è montato su bus PCI...
Faccio un tentativo, per ora grazie.
EDIT: come non detto, aggiunto le ModeLine ma niente di fatto, sempre i soliti messaggi
