Sparcstation 20, 224 megs of RAM, 4.x gig SCSI hard drive, and an external SCSI cd drive.
During the install, when I do a swapon /dev/sda2 it immediately segfaults.
Read here that this is ok, so I kept going and installed the rest of Gentoo.
After the install, when it boots, instead of SILO, I get SProgram Terminated and I'm stuck at a boot prompt. Doing some Google'ing I found some other examples of the 'SProgram Terminated', but either the poster of the problem didn't find/get an answer, or the answer they got didn't work in this case.
Kinda stuck.
This same machine was running Mandrake 7.1 for Sparc just fine before I put (or tried to) Gentoo on it, so I'm pretty sure that its not a hardware problem.
Anyone? |

This one (or one like it) I went through, too. In my case, I believe it
was a problem with having built a kernel from a version which did not
work too well. I am currently running
Linux dragonfly.inforead.com 2.4.21-sparc-r1 #1 SMP Wed Jun 25 14:11:11 UTC 2003 sparc sun4m Texas Instruments, Inc. - SuperSparc-(II) GNU/Linux
which is very stable. Another way to get this problem is not to have
/boot completely installed (this happened on a different system after
a silo update). The solution to that was:
- Make sure silo files (first.b, second.b, etc) are all in place,
- /boot/silo.conf is set up right;
- Do 'cd /boot; silo -C /boot/silo.conf -f' (to force a good
boot block to be written.)
It was the last step which cured my problem. |
