|

I tried to read guides and everything, but I am running in circles and need help.
Goal: Want wifi working.
Problem: iwconfig do not see anything:
Code: |
nb301b ~ # iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
|
Hw: Toshiba Portege M750-10G, I think this should have Intel wifi card with ipw2200 driver, but I am not sure anymore.
So the first question: how to find out what drivers I really need?
lspci gives:
Code: |
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Memory Controller Hub (rev 07)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)

03:0b.5 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd xD-Picture Card Controller (rev 11)

Looks like 01:00.0 "Intel Device 4232" is the only choice, but what lshw gives is confusing for me:
Code: |
*-network UNCLAIMED
description: Network controller
product: Intel Corporation
vendor: Intel Corporation
physical id: 0
bus info: pci@0000:01:00.0
version: 00
width: 64 bits
clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list
configuration: latency=0

Is it really there? (It is . I have no problems under msWindows)
Kernel: 2.6.27-gentoo-r7, CONFIG_IPW2100=m, CONFIG_IPW2200=m, CONFIG_IEEE80211=m (I tried to play with these, but with no success... ). Running the drivers gives no problems, but it also has no effect.
Code: |
~ # modprobe ieee80211
~ # modprobe ipw2200
~ # dmesg | tail
ieee80211: 802.11 data/management/control stack, git-1.1.13
ieee80211: Copyright (C) 2004-2005 Intel Corporation <jketreno@linux.intel.com>
ipw2200: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200/2915 Network Driver, 1.2.2kdq
ipw2200: Copyright(c) 2003-2006 Intel Corporation
~ # iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
ifb0 no wireless extensions.
ifb1 no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.

I do not know what to look at, please give me a hint and say what info should I post here. |

That's a 5100, not a 2200. You need iwlagn from a recent kernel, and net-wireless/iwl5000-ucode. |

Thanks a lot, that helped in a few seconds.
Now I see the card, but still I am not able to scan.
Before asking for further help, I'll try to upgrade to the recent kernel and play a bit with wpa_supplicant...
not today, however.
Still I would like to ask:
How should I have known that? Was there any easy way to find out (except asking here)?
Thanks, Martin. |
