Hello all,

I'm doing an install on a new box for me...a Dell precision 470. It has dual Xeon 2.8Ghz cpus.
I have enabled hyperthreading in the bios....the Gentoo install disc recognizes them as 4 cpus.

For my MAKEOPTS option, should I set it to be -j5 or -j3 ?

thanks in advance,

cayenne

whichever you want - in fact, whichever gives better performance. I'd probably use j5.

btw, if you feel very experimental, there's always the option of simply using -j, but make sure you also use the option that limits cpu time (and you'll prolly run out of ram anyway)...

Hi, with that kind of CPU, I prefer -j5

Considering people keep saying safe option is cpu+1 i would have even said 6 too keep all core busy. Well, if you consider an HT virt core = an hardware core.
Else i would use 4 (as core+1 + core+1)
