I am using an IBM A21p laptop which has a ati rage128 video card. Since I want to use the high resolution console, I turn on the Console drivers --> VGA text console, Video mod selection support and Frame-buffer support --> Support for frame buffer devices (EXPERIMENTAL), ATI Rage128 display support (EXPERIMENTAL) while I was compiling the kernel. When I use the kernel with these flags on, the screen is flashing, I could not use it at all.

Before I switched to gentoo, I used Redhat. I remember I could use a high resolution console and see that little penguine. So this framebuffer worked on my laptop. Could anyone give some suggestions?

Thanks.

just curious...did you pass anything to the kernel line like a vga=791 option....enabling the stuff in the kernel didnt seem to matter till i also added something to grub...then i was able to get the right resolution...also just curious what kernel are you using?

and what kernel did you use?...is it possible (if this is not the case already) for you to switch to the linus 2.4.18 and see if it helps....it always worked for me that the other sources presented some issue that the plain vanilla sources did not...might always be just my own inadaquate knowledge of certains options but i never seem to have troubles with the linus kernel

It works now. I am using the VESA VGA driver instead of ATI Rage128 driver.

I am using the gentoo kernel.
