Greetings,
After i do an emerge -uD --newuse world and a security vunerability is fixed, does portage automatically stop and restart the service so that the new files take effect?? |

no.
if for instance you upgrade apache, you'd need to:
/etc/init.d/apache restart
after a major update i prefer to just reboot. |

how hard would it be to add it into the portage/ebuild system?
I ask mostly because there is never any mention of "please restart apache so the updated version takes effect" or anything like that, so i wonder how many newer users think they are fully patched and secure, but havn't rebooted in x (high number) days. |

Good point. Personally I do not like to reboot unless I am rebuilding the kernel since I am running Gentoo on a server. The problem is that it would actually need to know what services are depending on the updated package in order to restart them correctly. It would be interesting to see this work. |

This is something that's just kept coming up for me, so I've started a script to do the basics. I intend to add more features - ie, reasons to restart a script.
It's fairly straightforward and includes blacklists and whitelists to prevent certain services restarting.
Let me know if you find it helpful.
