PostPosted: Fri Oct 11, 2002 7:56 am    Post subject: i nearly got it working Reply with quote

nearly because of i got it working with 640x480 resolution (i've applied the standard lpp patch for 2.4.18 to gentoo-sources 2.4.19-r9 and made some fixes so that it worked). Then I've triied to change the patch so that linux_logo.h can contain also images which are bigger than 640x480 (and i've takken the gentoo-boot-splash for kde as background 800x600 and converted it with the program shich is included in another patch which produces a linux_logo.h file out of a raw ppm file). So this nearly worked - because of i can see the picture for a short time - but after this i get a kernel panic - the kernel panic happens exactly when the kernel like to print out the first text line. And thats the point where i am at time - i am searching for this error - but since i am not a kernel developer, i can't find it. If anyone have an idea - then please mail it to me.

Or even post how you got it working with 640x480 with 2.4.19 :D

I really think this would make a nice addition to the gentoo kernel, even if it is just an option in the kernel. Maybe after it's all ironed out, an ebuild for a boot-screen.

Maybe this will help somebody dealing with the Linux Progress Patch. I noticed that LTSP (thin client project) uses LPP.
http://www.ltsp.org/contrib/customkernel.html

Though alot of it is in their specific syntax, it does have a link to a 2.4.18 patch, along with at least a little bit of info :D

Anywho.. at the very least it's a valid link to a 2.4.18 patch.

i've read it - but there isn't really something new. It only describes how to apply the patch with patch -p1 aso... But this isn'T the problem - the problem is that i've get a kernel panic in 800x600 (640x480 works nearly perfect) - and since i am no kernel developer i have no idea how to solve it.

simply apply the patch for 2.4.18 to the sources of 2.4.19-r9 and then solve all the failed hunks by hand (it isn't to much)

Your right, LPP is one of the most disorganized things I have ever seen.
Basically it's a matter of downloading the patch, downloading the theme stuff, and going through everything by hand.

The jist is to apply the patch (cd /usr/src/linux ; patch -p1 < lpp-patch-whatever), make your config and be sure to apply the experimental LPP support in the framebuffer section. (Use the section in "documentation, tips and tricks" here https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=14778 to learn how to setup framebuffer right). After that, configure your bootmanager (lilo, grub, whatever) to include a kernel parameter like so, "CONSOLE=/dev/tty2 console=/dev/tty2" which makes all the messages that normally spout through your screen go to tty2 instead of the default tty1. Now, the Progress bar won't go further than 50% at that point, so reading the documentation that comes with the theme stuff is what I did.
Getting the patch working has been my biggest issue. I've ran into problems with it recognizing my swap space, and other wierd little things.
I hope that's just me, as I'm going to try it again.

Fixing failed hunks shouldn't be that hard. Have 2 terminals open, one with the original failed file, and the other with the .rej version of the file. Now import all differences from the .rej file into the original file by hand; done

About lpp, I can remember running a suse with a 2.4.<something> kernel some time ago which booted lpp just fine. Then I tried this on my gentoo box and got it running at 1024x768. I used the ltsp 2.4.18 patch, applied to vanilla 2.4.18 (+xfs, preemt and netdev-random). I modified some rc file in /etc to work around the >50% problem (cant remember which, but I can check). I used the grub gentoo splash file, which I stretched in gimp. The only thing that prevented me from using this solution permanently is the fact that the fonts are totally garbled. Apart from this, everything worked(tm) !!

Since it took me approx 1 weekend to fix the above, I was too lazy to continue hacking on it so I installed a non lpp kernel. If there's somebody that would be interested in helping me out in fixing the fonts (and getting lpp to run properly on gentoo) please notify me on this board.

Hi
I'd like to help...
Just tell me what to do.
I managed to have a fullscreen splash fut it is not lpp, so it doesn't show a progress bar, only a big image.

i think it would be a great idea to do an entry in gentoo bugzilla for this thread - so that it could get discussed and hopefully solved there. Also, does anyone know if there a kernel patches as something like an ebuild avaible ? would it be possible to do a patch as ebuild (surly the user then have to do manually the kernel configuration) ?

ok
Here's the howto

First get this http://freakzone.net/gordon/src/fblogo-0.5.0.tar.gz
Compile the software.
Then pic your image and resize it in gimp to the size of your fbconsole, save it in png indexed with less than 224 colors.
then
Code:
# fblogo yourpic.png linux_logo.h
# fblogo_patch /usr/src/linux width heidht > splash.patch
# cd /usr/usr/src/linux
# patch -p1 < /path/to/splash.patch
# make xconfig
enable framebuffer and the logo must be tux.
# make dep && make clean && make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install
install the kernel and reboot.
Enjoy  8)

Yoannez - thanks for the info! I really don't need a progress bar so I am just doing the other one. But could you give some details about how you choose the size of your fbconsole?

I am using Grub and I can't seem to get it right. I want it to be 1280x960

Thanks!

Derek

EDIT: Also could you give me a tip on reducing the colors of a PNG in Gimp? I can do it in Photoshop but am fairly new to the Gimp - and can't seem to find the option.

Thanks again!

Derke

hey Yoannez, do you have the link to the extra info you have found ? I would be really interrested in making an ebuild for this.

normally you just have to append vga=mode to your kernel line (vga=789 is for 800x600 for example). The modes can be found in the kernel source documentation under ?hmmm - can't remeber exactly - but i think it was in the fb/vesafb.txt?

Hi
Sorry I should have posted the url but I couldn't find it, but now
It's here
http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/k/kernel-patch-lpp/kernel-patch-lpp_0.4.0-5.tar.gz
This works with 2.4.19 :)
