Hi, noob here compiling my first gentoo kernel on a SPARC. Can anyone tell me what the deal is with these config files that need updating? Do I need to update these or can I let them be? I set CONFIG_PROTECT as per the readme instructions while I was doing my emerge to get the stage 3 up to date. I then unset it as per same instructions. And if this isn't the right forum for this post can someone kindly give me a push in the right direction? Thanks!

When packages are updated, they may want to overwrite configuration files in /etc. If this was done automatically, you would loose all your settings when a package was updated. Instead, the new file is copied in as .__cfg????__<filename>. When you run the command etc-update, as root, you can merge the new files in with the old, or just overwrite them. You select a file to update, and then you will see a diff of the new and old files. Then you can select to keep the old file, the new file, or merge them together. As a general rule of thumb, I replace old files if I have not modified them. Otherwise I will merge the files so that I retain the settings I have changed.

If you go slow and read what's going on, it should make sense.

much appreciated - I'm going to replace old files I haven't modified. Man, almost done. I'm pretty excited about this. Running an UltraSPARC Axi 333Mhz. Next up, we'll see if I can get it to boot with Gentoo! Thanks again.
