Yeah, I was lazy and truncated the ~/.local directory. ~/.local/share/applications is where my .desktop files are.

Thanks for the wiki link. I'll get around to localizing and tweaking my menu files pretty soon, but it sure was a lot easier with the old editor.

But being gentoo users we are quite used to editing config files by hand, aren't we? Just look at the date I joined the forums. I was a Slackware package maintainer several years before that. Maybe I just got spoiled with xfce4, although my all-time favourite wm was sawfish on pre-2.0 Gnome. Alt-middle-click to set a persistent state for the selected application window was the nuts. Havoc Pennington killed that project when he dumbed it down to crap with Gnome-2.0 and forced metacity on everyone. I have to use devilspie to replicate some of the old sawfish functions. At least I can with xfce/compiz/emerald, which I can't with Gnome.

Enough of the gripes. The wiki link that bob posted has all the info I needed and I tweaked my menu well enough for now. I'll dig deeper when I get the chance.

Amen to that! I tried KDE-4, and I couldn't get it off my computer fast enough. And while I think about giving KDE-4.2x a try, I still read far too many tales of woe about KDE-4x to have that thought go farther than, "yeah, right."

Blessed be!

Hi, I've got a question about notification-deamon-xfce :

There is a strange dependency fot this ebuild :
Quote:
RDEPEND=">=dev-libs/glib-2.6
>=x11-libs/gtk+-2.6
x11-libs/libnotify
>=xfce-base/libxfcegui4-4.3.90
>=xfce-base/libxfce4util-4.3.90
[b]xfce? ( >=xfce-base/xfce-mcs-manager-4.2.2 )[/b]
>=x11-libs/libsexy-0.1.3
dev-libs/dbus-glib"

The use flag xfce allows the xfce-base/xfce-mcs-manager-4.2.2 dependency, but this package induced a conflict with xfce4.6 :
Code:
[ebuild  N    ] xfce-base/xfce-mcs-manager-4.4.3  USE="-debug" 601 kB
[ebuild   R   ] x11-misc/notification-daemon-xfce-0.3.7  USE="xfce* -debug" 0 kB
[blocks B     ] xfce-base/xfce-mcs-manager ("xfce-base/xfce-mcs-manager" is blocking xfce-base/xfce4-settings-4.6.0)

Does the xfce flag and xfce-mcs-manager are really needed?

I don't understand why the xfce use fag is necessary as the notification-deamon-xfce have been written for xfce... moreover, the README of this package never speaks about this dependency :
Quote:
Notification-daemon-xfce is a port of Gnome's notification-daemon
for the Xfce desktop. It depends on the following packages:
* gtk >= 2.6.0
* libxfce4util >= 4.3.90
* libxfcegui4 >= 4.3.90
* dbus >= 0.36
* libsexy >= 0.1.3
The Xfce version also uses xfce4-dev-tools for creating the make files.

PS : notification-daemon-xfce works very well without XFCE flag and xfce-mcs-manager (with claws-mail and claws-mail-notification for exemple)

In 4.6.0 xfce-mcs-manager and xfce-mcs-plugins are replaced by xfce4-settings. That package pulls in x11-libs/libnotify if the 'libnotify' USE flag is set. From the RDEPEND section of xfce4-settings-4.6.0.ebuild:
Code:

!xfce-base/xfce-mcs-manager
!xfce-base/xfce-mcs-plugins
libnotify? ( x11-libs/libnotify )

So you have removed these packages :

Code:

# emerge -Cv xfce-base/xfce-mcs-manager xfce-base/xfce-mcs-plugins

Sure, and removed the xfce flag for notification-daemon-xfce which is not necessary with XFCE4.6; without that, notification-deamon continues to ask these packages.---> maybe we must write a bump version of notification-deamon-xfce for xfce-4.6 (just remove the flag and the dependency inside the ebuild)

I've been rocking XFCE-4.6, and I have to say, it's really amazing! I have decided that it's a better setup than KDE-3.5.10...almost. and it's WORLDS above KDE-4.x, even as is. Kudos to the XFCE folks for not dropping a KDE-4.x style turd on us.

I am in the process of whipping up a Franken-desktop with XCFE-4.6.x as the base, and using all my favorite KDE-3.5.x apps. I've gotten almost all the kinks ironed out, except for a few which I am not so sure can be fixed without messing up the lighter weight that XFCE carries.

The one I really want to fix is to get konqueror to start Terminal (the XFCE terminal) instead of konsole. I've never liked konsole, and its "transparency" sucks ditch water under XFCE. Konsole will work in an opaque mode, but frankly, I like Terminal much better. (hint hint)

Oh, and apparently emerge -av x11-themes/tango-icon-theme x11-themes/tango-icon-theme-extras fixes the XFCE-4.6.x long-gone icon problem. Woohoo!

Blessed be!
Pappy

I ran 4.6.0 for a while with stable xorg-server-1.3.0.0, but now xfce4-settings-4.6.0 wants to pull in the '~arch' xorg-server-1.5.3.

Normally I'd go ahead and upgrade X, but until I can figure out how to make media keys work on it I'm going to wait. For now I have reluctantly reverted xfce.

Any ideas?

Hi,

is anyone using xfce 4.6 and kopete + korganizer (system tray) from kde 4.2 ?
When I logout from xfce, kopete crashes sometimes. Plus, the logout needs quite some time to progress.
When I try to change the restart style of korgac (korganizer reminder) to, say "if running", and click "save session", its restart style gets reset to never.
All these problems did not occur in xfce 4.4

not a support question at all, but how are you guys experiencing xfce 4.6? any ex-gnome 2.24 users that switched to it and stayed? if so, why, if not, why not? don't really care about kde 4 users, since i can understand anyone moving away from that piece of crap (what an incredibly horribly failed project that seems to be, even with 4.2). i know i could just emerge it and try it, but i'd like to hear some opinions first :-) thanks.

@justinkb:
I've been using xfce since version 4.2 and never had any real problems, except for those in my last post.
For me, xfce (any version) is incredibly stable and fast (compared to kde3/4, I never used gnome). I recommend to try 4.4 as the changes to 4.6 aren't that noticeable.

Guys, does anybody experience problems with 4.6.0?
Now when I upgraded from 4.5.99, I cannot even login.
When starting with startxfce4 session just hangs because xfdesktop processes seems to start in infinite loop. At last X server forbids connect due to max client number.

I've already tried to uninstall all xfce-base/*, xfce-extra/* packages and emerge them again, but nothing helps.

I've created https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=263271
Some help needed badly.

@MageSlayer:
Did you try a clean xfce configuration?
Backup and then delete <user>/.config/xfce4 (and maybe xfce4-session) and start xfce.

Yes, I've moved ~/.config/xfce4 and xfce4-session as well to backup directory and restarted X.
No difference.
