PostPosted: Fri Feb 27, 2009 11:08 am    Post subject: [SOLVED] Broken kill(all) Reply with quote

I was doing a normal "emerge -avuD world" update yesterday. The thing is it seems that it broke something, alghough no special warnings appeared.

I cannot kill(all) anymore. (At first i thought it was my keymap in terminal, but CTRL+C is working fine. Gnome-terminal doesn't close on exit)
A ctrl+c or kill generates a defunct process.

Pressing CTRL+C in shell: nothing happens
kill(all): doesnt work; if a do a -9 kill it works
Emerging something that checks for sleeps (coreutils): hangs up

System worked fine for atleast a year now. I don't know what exactly is broken or how I can fix it :/

If you experience problems with automounting (windows opened
twice or nothing happening on media insertion) try changing
the status of the automount USE flag.

should recompile the packages providing these plugins. Also, make sure you
compile the Qt packages, and the packages that depend on it, with the same

I have pretty much the same problem suddenly. But in KDE 4 konsole.

^C, ^Z etc don't work, and I get half a gazillion <defunct> processes on various shell scripts.

BASH version is latest 3.x (not 4.0), and the only mayor changes I can remeber was the readline upgrade. But I ran revdep rebuild as recommended.

Any chance you are running x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-180.35?
If yes, have a look at this bug: bug 260441

Had exactly the same symptoms, but couldn't figure out which package was broken. THX!

mask nvidia-drivers 180.35
Code:

echo "=x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-180.35" >> /etc/portage.package.mask"
emerge -avuD nvidia-drivers

I never would have thought of nvidia-drivers. Interesting how evil they can get.

I was using 180.35 too!

Thanks a lot.

I was bitten by this too. Thx for the tip, I wouldn't have thought that the nvidia-drivers could be responsible.

This has been hurting my brain the past couple days. After upgrading to this version and then the next day being downgraded due to a mask, I definitely should have actually read the reason before just unmasking it. Definitely a left-field cause to my thinking.

180.37 is out. I will have it in my overlay over the weekend after I test it.

Quote:
Fixed a problem that caused signals to be blocked in some applications.
* Fixed a problem that could cause Xid errors and display
corruption in certain cases when OpenGL is used to render to
redirected windows, for example when Java2D is used with the
-Dsun.java2d.opengl=true option.
* glGetStringi(GL_EXTENSIONS, i) no longer returns NULL in OpenGL
3.0 preview contexts.
* Fixed a problem that caused the screen to flicker momentarily
when OpenGL applications exit unexpectedly on GeForce 6 and 7
series GPUs.
* Fixed an X server crash when an X client attempts to draw
trapezoids and RenderAccel is disabled.
* Improved recovery from certain types of errors.
* VDPAU updates:
* Fixed corruption on some H.264 clips.
* Update documentation.
* Fixed VC-1 decoding on 64-bit platforms.
* Improved handling of invalid H.264 streams.
* Fixed a problem that caused surfaces to be marked as
visible too early when the blit presentation queue is in
use.

I just committed it to my overlay

jmd0 ~ # equery l nvidia-drivers
[ Searching for package 'nvidia-drivers' in all categories among: ]
* installed packages
[I--] [ ~] x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-180.37 (0)
jmd0 ~ #

The ^C bug is gone in x86_64. Also I have not tested vdpau yet.
