I just saw an Austrian film called the bone man..pretty good!

Nice one, definitely. You'd probably also like Muttertag (read the user comment for more info) though I don't think there's an English synchronisation. Too much would be lost anyway... Even higher levels of sarcasm and black humor you'll find in Komm, süßer Tod.

I'd also like to mention Das weiße Band which is in the cinemas right now - it's a portrait of Authoritarian German society before WW-I. I have yet to see it, but it's definitely no popcorn movie.

I saw this film yesterday, and I thought it was pretty awesome! Spanish cinema usually sucks a lemon, but this time they really hit the nail in the head. Two visions of the world clash in Alexandria: One, headed by Hypatia, the phylosophical search of the truth, the one that doesn't hesitate to question pre-establised beliefs when they don't fit the observation. The other, the religious fanatism, divided in the different beliefs, who seeks to impose their pre-establised "truth", persecuting anyone who dares questioning it.

2nd one will make you weep. I can't ever forget the words in this movie: Seita, one rice for you and one rice for me..

It hurts more when you know that its semi-autobiographical. 2nd, did I forget this one: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0354899/

Yeah. Nothing I want to see more than a Japanese film about how they were the poor victims of a war they started, particularly after the inhumane things they did to the Chinese, Koreans, and Philippinos, not to mention American and British POWs. I wonder how the children affected by their murderous and inhumane actions felt.

DevD

An Indian movie, its a modern rendition of a classic novel. What's good about this movie is its camera work, and music as a medium of story progression (no not the regular song and dance routine).

I don't get the Hollywood = crap, Foreign = good perspective.

I've seen a few good foreign films, but most tend to be art for art's sake crap. Utterly unwatchable and entertaining only to those thinking they're better than someone else simply because they like it.
On the rare occassion I watch a film, I prefer the Hollywood fluff. So, thumbs up to mindless Hollywood films!

So everyone should only be able to make movies about the victims of the worst atrocities of any given war? I haven't seen the movie in question, but according to wikipedia it sounds like there was valid justification for the chosen setting, whereas if it had been some generic tragedy transplanted into that particular setting, I might be inclined to agree with you.

Oldboy is epic...I have to check out the last one...seems to have good reviews.

The only things these movies have in common are being Korean, well-directed, and well-shot. Otherwise I see no reason to lump them together. As others have said, there's nothing magical about a movie being foreign, other than many Americans being too lazy to read subtitles. If you like Oldboy, watch the rest of the "vengeance trilogy" and JSA. If you like Bin-jip, watch a bunch of other Ki-duk Kim movies. If you're a fan of Kim's work, you're probably more likely to enjoy Bergman's "trilogy" from 1960s Sweden than some other random well-rated Korean movie popular with American audiences---"Gwoemul" ("The Host") comes to mind.

Now that I'm done with my rant, I'll recommend the most recent foreign movie I've seen and enjoyed, O-bi, O-ba - Koniec cywilizacji

++ for "In Bruges", one of the only films in the past ten years that I don't mind watching repeatedly.
-- for District 13, it's pretty bad and completely forgettable. Poor acting, poor plot, poor script, average effects, the only redeeming aspect is the Parkour.

La Antena is good to watch once, a kind of homage to classic cinema like "The Eye", but with use of modern effects in places.

Let the right one in Is a good watch too, one of the better vampire movies made in the last few years.

Son of Rambow was basically my childhood, and the french kid typified every frenchman I've ever met.

[urlhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0464141/=]The Orphanage[/url] and REC are both decent horror films, a good way to spend a few hours.

Delicatessen (1991) French. Need to see the humor to appreciate it.

Brother (1997) 1 and II. Russian. Second part is where it realy goes crazy.
