especially M - after watching that you don't need to watch any crime thriller again. They all copied from that movie.

Drowning by numbers - a good film if you are into surrealistic stuff.

Delamorte Delamore in its uncut version.

Suspiria (!)

I haven't seen any of those except Suspiria..I'll have to look into them.

I don't get the Hollywood = crap, Foreign = good perspective.

I've seen a few good foreign films, but most tend to be art for art's sake crap. Utterly unwatchable and entertaining only to those thinking they're better than someone else simply because they like it.

I'm not saying all Hollywood is crap, but the majority certainly is. They'll put out something decent every once in a while, I'll give them that much. In actuality, it's all a matter of personal taste so I'll try to give some of my reasons to clarify why I personally don't like them. There comedies are extremely lame with stupid jokes designed for idiots. There horror movies try to make up for poorly designed plots by adding in excessive gore, over-the-top CGI effects, horrible use of music to try and make something more scary e.g. when opening a door into a dark unknown room, they will try to build suspense by making the music louder building up to "the moment" and then a cat or whatever will jump out and everyone is supposed to jump out of their seat..fucking stupid and cliche shit like this is what I'm talking about. And let's not even get into the remakes they've destroyed. Need I go on? I'm sure some people out there know what I'm talking about it. BTW, pjp...out of curiosity, which foreign movies have you seen that you're referring to?

Ah, _that_ crap. I don't even consider that stuff. I watch what looks good (or not, actually... haven't seen anything in quite a while).

I think that's just the nature of entertainment, or really probably anything.

How many _____ suck compared to how many are really good?

Insert any one of: actors, athletes, books, poems, merchandise, songs. Co-workers :) <your list here>

Perhaps either you don't like movies or you don't have much experience with Hollywoood. I agree with pjp: watch whats's good, no where its come from from

If you hate Hollywood movies, I don't understand how much you will hate Bollywood . They make 99% crap but thats what my countrymen like. You just need to remember that when you hit a Bollywood actor in his arm using a Baseball Bat, Baseball Bat will break. when you Over last 20 years, they have hardly made 10-20 good movies, when around 300 movies are made each year. Hollywood is much better in that it at least makes 10 good every year. Except of the those I mentioned, here are some more mvoeis I like from Hollywood: Lookout, JFK, Missing, Tears of the Sun, V for Vendetta, Vanishing Point, Spy Game , Memento and The Bourne Triology --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bourne_(film_series)

For some foreign movies, some Bolllywood recommendations, my favorites:

Lagan
Dil Chahta Hai
Vaastav
Dev
Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi
Prahar
Aakhen --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aankhen_(2002_film) (Direction is Poor though but movie itself is good)

NOTE: Seems like URL tag has problems with links containing braces ()

I do watch what's good, well what I consider good anyway. I never said I don't watch Hollywood movies but look at the majority of what they put out...utter shit. All the good ones I've already seen, hence me looking for some good foreign ones to watch.

The point is, 99% of movies from all countries suck. 99% of French films are garbage. 99% of Italian films are garbage. 99% of Indian films are garbage. 99% of Japanese films are garbage. Indian garbage smells a little spicier, Japanese garbage smells a little fishier, French garbage smells like BO, but regardless of the fact that it smells different doesn't mean that it doesn't smell bad.

Anyway, how come no one's mentioned Amelie or Y Tu Mama Tambien?

While that's true, there is a legitimate reason to seek out "foreign" films ( the 1% good ones ofcourse ). Another language, another culture, it all means that even the same story get's told very different then the standard ( = Hollywood ) movie would tell it. That makes it intresting enough to seek it out. The only disadvantage is that in order to understand a foreign film completly you should speak the language, and it's a bit hard to learn to speak a few dozen languages.

Anyway, there are some really really good French films ( i speak a little bit french so i am biased )
- Pacte des loups
- Cité des enfants perdues ( City of the lost children )
- Delicatessen
- Les fabuleux destins d'Amelie Poulin ( Amelie )
- Taxi ( the original )
And i forgot the others

I thought it was a decent film, not excellent, but worth a watch anyway.

Definitely not a list of the best non-Hollywood films but some I found interesting.

23 (German)
Hacker film supposedly based on a true story in which a guy gets obsessed by the number 23. Ends up with them getting involved with drugs and the KGB.

Anatomie (German)
A med student gets a place at a summer school to be taught about dissection. Ends up with some weird cult being revealed and people being murdered in interesting ways.

Things to Do Before You're 30 (English)
A group of twenty-something friends trying desperately to hang on to the friendship of their youth whilst the responsibility of adulthood is tearing them in different directions. Not the best film, but quite interesting and a good introduction to typical life here in England.

Brassed Off (English)
Interesting look at the effects of coal mine closures here in the 80s. Focuses on a group of miners who are part of a brass band, and the general mood of the community following pit closures.

I watched Waltz With Bashir a couple days ago. Pretty good. The voice acting sucks, apparently because they were just dubbing it with actual interviews as opposed to using professional actors, but it is basically off in both Hebrew and English dubs.

Delicatessen was good, as recommended in the previous thread. Good Bye Lenin and The Lives of Others are two good East Germany films.
