Hi all,

For a long while I've been successfully running Mplus (www.statmodel.com) under wine. Unfortunately, for some odd reason, the latest version of the program does not run under wine. I was wondering whether there were any alternatives out there that might let me run the program. I do not want to run it under a virtual machine, namely as this would defeat the purpose of being able to run it remotely via the shell.

Any thoughts?

Alex

I just tried it and it won't run the program. It claims it's not a dos program.

Best,

Alex

According to therir website it indeed isn't a DOS program
Quote:
System Requirements
Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP/Vista
(see below for information about Mplus on Mac OS X)
At least 8 MB of RAM
At least 20 MB of hard disk space

I'm afraid you'll have to use a windows emulator, among which the others than Wine are paid (Cross-over Office, Cedega). Maybe there are others, but they'll certainly not be as good as Wine.
Maybe you could try VirtualBox if you have a Windows licence? It seems to me that this program is fairly important to anyone who use it, so maybe it's worth trying...

No, I imagine it's not, though it runs on the XP 'command line' or the older versions ran under wine.

Yeah, I tried to see whether it worked for crossover office, though had little luck getting it to even run. It just complicated matters more than necessary I guess.

That would work, but it would defeat the purpose, i.e., I just want to run it under linux so that I can have it merrily go in the background via screen or so that I can get it to run by ssh'ing into my box, etc. Running it under VM defeats both purposes.

Thanks anyway.

Well, would it be possible to run the VirtualBox image headless, install your program as well as an SSH server and connect to it remotely that way?

I didn't realize that was an option made available. I will give this a go in the near future and report back on how it went. Thanks for the pointer!

First of all you should file a bug or at least start a topic in wine's forum about this regression. If it worken then it might be easily (therefore quickly) fixable.

I've already done that; sorry I wasn't more clear about it. The problem is that it's a closed source software package (though it shouldn't be!), so it's likely hard for developers to work out what the incompatibility is all about.

I've only ever used Wine once, to run uTorrent, so forgive me if this suggestion is naive, but have you tried changing the Windows-version being emulated via 'winecfg'? Maybe your updated app needs Vista now..? :?

I'll give that a shot, but don't hold out much hope as the app runs fine under XP on my windows box at work. However, it might make a difference.

Nope, didn't work... I used and tried all the possibly relevant versions.

Maybe you just to install some packages. The popular ones are available through winetricks. A new version is always here.

Paste here the output when you try to run the program. Maybe will notice something pointing towards a missing package.[/url]

I'll try that at some point, though tomorrow is out. Anyway, all I get when I try to run the software is the following:

Code:

     Mplus VERSION 5.2
     MUTHEN & MUTHEN

     Running input file 'ex3.1.inp'...

forrtl: severe (157): Program Exception - access violation
Image              PC        Routine            Line        Source
Mplus.exe          012B9F3F  Unknown               Unknown  Unknown
Mplus.exe          012933EB  Unknown               Unknown  Unknown
Mplus.exe          00419CBB  Unknown               Unknown  Unknown
Mplus.exe          01171E60  Unknown               Unknown  Unknown
Mplus.exe          01347875  Unknown               Unknown  Unknown
Mplus.exe          01327D09  Unknown               Unknown  Unknown
KERNEL32.dll       7EE38349  Unknown               Unknown  Unknown

I have some debugging output, too, though it's rather long.

It lists Win95 and Win98 support, so there's a remote chance you'll be able to get it running under DOSBox. You'll need to find an appropriate set of install disks, and possibly sacrifice a chicken or two.

I meant the output from the terminal in which you start that program via wine, so it should start with a line similar to:
Code:
user@machine current_dir $ wine executable_name

Hi all,

Winetricks didn't seem to, ahem, do the trick. As such, I will torment you all with a posting of what wine's debugger outputted. Hopefully this will give somebody insight.

Best,

Alex
