I'll start this here to see if anyone has seen anything like it or has any
suggestions:
The following are stable (for me):
- Ultra-2 (2x400), kernel=2.4.20-r0-SMP, xfree-4.3.0-r2,
Elite3D-m6 or Creator3D+(ser 2)=FFB2+(H);
- Ultra-60 (2x450), kernel=2.4.21-r1-SMP, xfree-4.3.0-r2,
Elite3D-m3(AFB(V));
- SS20 (2x70) kernel=2.4.21-r1-SMP, xfree-4.3.0-r2; CG6
- Ultra-2 (2x400) kernel=2.4.21-r1-SMP, no X.
The following stay up for 20secs -- 20hrs:
- Ultra-2 (2x400), kernel=2.4.21-r1-SMP, Elite3D;
- Ultra-2 (2x400), kernel=2.4.21-r1-SMP, Creator3D (ffb2+(H)).
The stable kernel on the U60 is the unstable kernel on the U2 (as
in a file copy from the U2 to the U60).
I believe (but have not absolutely confirmed) that X-related software on
the U2 & U60 is all at the same version. gcc, glibc are both current.
Version of window manager (fvwm) or of browser (mozilla) does not matter
(same behavior in each case).
Whatever it is, it kills X completely (and the terminal it was on), but
the system keeps on going.
If you start , the last line in /tmp/X is
just "xinit connection lost" and X puts nothing in its /var/log file to
indicate why, nor does any other log I can find.
I am willing to believe that something is missing that should be present,
but I can't think why it would be kernel-version sensitive.
Any thoughts at all? |

Well, here's something. I vaguely remembered removing a couple of lines
from /etc/X11/XFConfig when bringing up the U60 (it's been all of 10 days)
which loaded a couple no-longer built extensions:
Code: |
Load "pex5"
Load "xie"
|
because they weren't there. Well, on the U2 there were old versions of
libpex5.a, libxie.a still hanging around from last Christmas, and they were getting loaded.
So, I removed those and the lines loading them, and tried again. Subjectively, it's doing better, but who knows when I can say for sure one way or the other if such a change makes a diffrence.
I can see how loading incompatible modules could kill X, but I don't see off
hand how that would be kernel-version dependent?
Thoughts?

Well, it's lasted almost 2 days with 2.4.21-r1 & those lines removed, so I
am pretty sure they are related to the problem I have been seeing. This
leaves me with a few questions or comments:
- Why should loading obsolete X-modules manifest my carelessness as
kernel-related?;
- Why doesn't X notice that I am loading incompatible modules?;
- Why don't I clean up my Configuration file, since this is at least the
second time I have blamed junk in my Config file on the system (see
xpdf)?;
- I hope no one is bothered by my using the forum now and then as a
sounding board for my stream-of-conciousness approach to problem
solving.

I know I for one learned from this, so I don't see a issue with your posting it. If people don't want to read the post, they don't have to!
Thanks.

- Thanks to sfalconer for the kind remarks;
- Still doing fine, so I guess loading incompatible modules was my
problem;
- And I guess that if you leave garbage lying around, it attracts bugs.
