Posted: Tue Feb 03, 2009 6:11 am Post subject: What happened to my KDE menu? |
|
|
I installed KDE 4.2, tried it out for a few hours, determined that it wasn't ready for use, and switched back to KDE 3.5. Now my "K" menu and panel are messed up:
* The menu shows the entries it had under KDE 4.2, so a bunch of my KDE 3.5 programs are missing.
* About half the icons are missing, including all the category icons.
* The "most used applications" section only shows nine out of the ten applications it should be showing.
* The "Settings" submenu only shows the "Control Center" entry instead of entries for all the control panels (and it doesn't work).
Any suggestions on how to fix this?
Edit: Things are even more broken that I thought:
* The Control Center doesn't have any control panels
* Clicking on hyperlinks opens them in Kedit, not Konqueror (this includes hyperlinks in Konqueror itself)
* All but one of the application lauch buttons on the Kicker panel are missing.
* There are probably more broken things I haven't found yet. |

for the start try revdep-rebuild. if it fails:
1. emerge -evp kde-meta | grep -i kde | xargs emerge (assuming that you use kde-meta) This will reinstall every package, that is used from kde and has a kde in its name (you dont need to reinstall gcc and X server).
2. If you still expirience problems with the menu, etc, purge your configuration. |

Revdep-rebuild shows nothing relevant. This doesn't feel like a problem with the installation, it feels like a problem with the configuration. |

Deleting the .kde-4.2 folder, logging out, and logging back in fixed most of the problem. I still had to rebuild the Kicker panel. |

had a similar problem, in my case menu icons were replace by a folder icon.
i fixed it by running Code: | kbuildsycoca --noincremental | then restarting kicker
it seems to be caused by running a kde3 application under kde4 by doing so the configs get mixed up.
hope this helps _________________ ~AMD64

That could well be it. Since KSirc didn't make the KDE3->KDE4 transition, I was running the KDE3 version. |
