Hi,

I want to emerge 4.2 while keeping 3.5.9, but emerge won't let me...

Code:

$ emerge -pvuD @kde-4.2
(skipped)
[uninstall    ] kde-base/kdebase-3.5.9-r3  USE="arts branding cups hal java ldap lm_sensors opengl samba xcomposite xscreensaver -debug -ieee1394 -joystick -kdeenablefinal -kdehiddenvisibility -logitech-mouse -openexr -pam -xinerama"  [0]
[blocks b     ] <=kde-base/kdebase-3.5.9-r4 ("<=kde-base/kdebase-3.5.9-r4" is blocking kde-base/kdelibs-4.2.0)

I use kdeprefix. Is there a way to have 3.5 and 4.2 at the same time?

I have asked this question in Portage and Programming too, if that's inappropriate I'll pull it from here.

UPDATE
3.5.9 cannot be installed together with 4.2; 3.5.10 can.

Update to kde 3.5.10. That will allow a parallel kde 4 installation.

How do I update to 3.5.10? It doesn't seem to be in the portage tree.

It's inside the testing tree, so you need to use /etc/portage/package.keywords to unlock the packages.

Code:

sylvain@gentootux ~ $ eix startkde
[I] kde-base/kdebase-startkde
     Available versions:
        (3.5)   3.5.9 ~3.5.10-r5
        (4.1)   ~4.1.4
        (4.2)   ~4.2.0
        {arts debug elibc_FreeBSD kdeenablefinal kdeprefix xinerama}
     Installed versions:  3.5.9(3.5)(06:53:30 2008-10-24)(kdeenablefinal -arts -debug -elibc_FreeBSD -xinerama)
     Homepage:            http://www.kde.org/
     Description:         Startkde script, which starts a complete KDE session, and associated scripts

Sorry, my mistake! It is in portage, of course. Thanks!

Make sure and emerge kde-3.5.10 with the kdeprefix use flag when you upgrade it, so it get's properly slotted and doesn't conflict with kde-4.2.
