It would be nice, specially for those 56k dialup poor people, to have some option in emerge to make it download the next files to be build while building.

That means todays -u world for those people, if they have to download and build kde 3.0.2

(faked numbers)
Downloading: 10 hours
Building: 15 hours
total: 25 hours

Doesn't have to thing too much to see how many hours faster would be if they downloaded the next files while building.

Hi,

Mmmh, this sounds cool for me! :)

The only thing that I could imagine would be that probably you should still take care of some kind of "scheduling". I.e. that the download you you are running in the background of a buildprocess does not begin building until your "primary" build process is finshed. Otherwise you would probably get dependency problems... ;)

But nevertheless downloading one, two, or three packages while building another one really seems a nice idea and should speed up the whole operation a lot...

you could fire up another term and start emerge -f kde
wait a few minutes then in the other term just emerge -u kde
the -f should be downloadeg the whole time and .... *if* it stays ahread of the build process you should be set.

yeah, i know, but that's not as nice as doing that directly in emerge with every emerge we do ;)
And that would be lots more clean also :)
And RTC dialup users will be very happy :D

Everyone would love to believe that eventually everyone will have cable - but IMHO were going to be dealing with dial-up for the foreable future.

I havent been able to get gentoo yet cus im on a modem connection but if downloading was done in parallel to compiling it would half the time it would take me.
