A couple of months ago my laptop was running ArchLinux and it took ~ 1 minute and 40 seconds to get to Gnome. Now with Gentoo + OpenRC it takes 55 seconds to get from Grub to Gnome. I didn't include the time it took my laptop to POST and get to Grub because I can't speed that up (unless someone knows something). I haven't finished installing other packages like VLC and OpenOffice (I think I may want the binary version) but I've exceeded my expectations.
Thanks to the dudes here that helped me get my Thinkpad going.
I'm gonna make a backup now.
Next project may be getting my Desktop PC to boot to Gnome in 30 seconds. Ubuntu takes too much damn time.
I've learned quite a bit - more or less Gentoo specific. |

Nice to hear that your laptop is working good with gentoo and that you learned new stuff.
Good thing I riced out my gentoo install - now it boots to the desktop environment in ~35s. This saves me so much time when I reboot my machine 20 times a day.
I'm sorry about the sarcasm, but you will later realize that these things are just silly and irrelevant. Better get that before becoming an "omg-optimizations" nerd. I don't use gentoo because it boots faster than ubuntu, but that certainly did impress me at first. _________________ Make install - not war! |

I see you have uncovered the downside of openrc.

I'm currently having problems with VLC (no video with xvid, have installed xvid package), but other than that I'm not having any problems. I may have my Core2 Desktop compile Firefox though. |

If you want your box to start up faster have a look at eINIT which can get you from grub to X in 7 seconds _________________ https://otw20.com/ OTW20 The new place for off the wall chat |
