It is perhaps a stupid idea, but why don't let the user choosing his rank ? I don't think people will abuse their rankin because there is no interest doing so. Being a Noob, i am answered precisely, but if I have choosed a higher ranking, perhaps other users will steps the details of the procedures.
It would be perhaps ore indicative : with the current system, a mega guru using debian for years would be considered as a newbie at the begining, when a beginner, asking 5000 things to install gentoo would be a guru faster !!

ultraViolet, you actually enlightened me! We could have a ranking system based in the ammount of answers asked about gentoo. For example, there could be a button in every "new post" form, that by pressing it, would add one point to the ranking system. If the point was through but the question was just a way to get this point (and not to learn), the moderator could reduce this point and let the user know about it (don't do it again buster or I'll make you a chick  ). This way, people will learn by asking and climb in rank. Also, the people that actually gave _the_ answer for the question (usually there are more than one), could be accredited 2 points! This way the moderators of this forum will hate me forever for making them read every new post to judge if it is a hoax  ... but it is a very accurate method!

I think ultraViolet is on to something. Only, others choose your rank. 'You get the rank you earn.' For more details, see thee Forum Personalities thread. Automatically chosen avatars to boot!

I think it's a little too complicated, but please, ANYTHING to save me from becoming l33t. I would simply feel silly and stop posting... I only have 24 more posts!

Hm, what about "Tux' lil' helper" instead of "Tux's lil' helper"?
Because we don't say "tux-s"
Jack -> Jack's gentoo
James -> James' gentoo

I like #2 with the penguin types. Let's face it-- this stuff really has little to do with how well someone knows *nix or Gentoo, but rather how frequently one posts.

Great-- if this board exists because it is just a chat community, but this is a Gentoo GNU/Linux community first and foremost.

For that reason I would drop Gentoo from the general escalation and leave Emporer as the biggest penguin=biggest poster. Some might never get there, but with the current system someone could still be a n00b and yet have plenty of helpful posts. The kind of L33tn355 that exists today is not an accurate picture at all. There is useful posting and then there is just posting for posting's sake.

I really like these forums and this is a great group...

BUT whenever I need to find something specific it is darn near impossible without hours of searching through countless banal irrelevant threads. Useful bits are obfuscated by pure garbage in many of the threads. People should be posting valid Gentoo content, as opposed to .. well really all I can politely say is that some are wasting CPU cycles and bandwidth for stuff that has no Gentoo relevance and should probably have best been kept to themselves or posted on a much better chosen forum.

Leave Gentoo, l33t, guru, whatever a user community vote decides is the steps along the path to the decided title Gooroo state indicating an individual with true Gentoo oneness as well as a helpful forum personna. Someone I know I can look to for guidance in finding my Gentoo path again when I go astray People who are helpful to another could receive a vote of confidence-- something entirely voluntary I give if I receive true enlightenment (or a righteous hack ;)) from another forum user.:

For example, I am a new Gentoo user. Joe Gentoo helps me configure my xorg.conf and get firefox emerged. It rocked fast so I give him my vote of confidence. After someone receives a predetermined number of such votes of confidence they would move up in whatever is the next step of the true Bodhisat way. People who deserve the guru label would thus earn it and be a source of example in this community.

I think the forums are fine the way they are. Who cares about the 1337 rank? It's tongue-in-check and I think it's quite funny. The only thing that I think would be helpful would be to have a Forums search option: "All Available Except OTW" and make that the default. That way it would eliminate alot of irrelevent searching.

What is "l33t" anyway? Jei snakker ikke Norsk!

Someone who was identified as a "guru" answered one of my questions, and was very helpful. I thought it was some kind of honorific either bestowed upon him/her or chosen by herself to describe her knowledge of Gentoo. In either case, I thought it meant something more than "they had posted 300 messages".

Nope. But it should. Whole rank structure is nothing but a post counter.

I really really really think we should replace l33t with something else. That rank makes me feel like we are trying to be cool.

If a major change has to be avoided, replacing l33t and n00b with Elite and Newbie/Freshman would be fine IMO. Just get rid of l33t and n00b. They really annoy me.

In my opinion, this current ranking system is good enough. I don't see any point why it should be replaced.

Seems like no one care the fact that many of us don't like the l33t rank.

Of the selections in this thread, this probably comes the closest.

Here is the current order of the titles you get:
Code:
n00b
Tux's lil helper
Guru
l33t
Veteran

Does it really make sense that after being "tux's little helper" you immediately graduate to being a guru?
There's massive cognitive dissonance going on there. It's kinda like a fake compliment.

The following order makes much more sense to me:
Code:
n00b
Tux's lil helper
Veteran
l33t
Guru

Think about it.
A veteran is okay, but anyone can become a veteran through experience.
Being a guru is great though. It's basically the highest compliment someone can pay you.

IMHO it's not important! (Those titles are useless because they never will say something about the skill level of a forum user)
The number reflecting how many posts a user made is enough for those who love numbers and statistics.

The second more repeated complain in the forums (the first one being about search sucking).

We can't have a set of ranks that sound good for everybody.

IMHO a guru is someone still pushing a religion whereas verteran sits around pushing beer glasses.
