Thanks man. You are right. The fix was in your link. And now everything is working fine again by sys-apps/hal-0.5.12_rc1-r6. _________________ Anyway it's all the same at the end...

I got things working properly again. I added the hal USE flag for make.conf. Compiled everything again and also updated the .fdi file:
Code: | <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!--
Section "InputDevice"
Driver "evdev"
Option "XkbLayout" "fi"
EndSection
-->
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
<!-- Mouse configuration -->
<match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.mouse">
<append key="info.callouts.add" type="strlist">hal-setup-keymap</append>
<merge key="input.x11_driver" type="string">evdev</merge>
</match>
<!-- Keyboard configuration -->
<!-- <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.keyboard">-->
<match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.keymap">
<append key="info.callouts.add" type="strlist">hal-setup-keymap</append>
</match>
<match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.keys">
<merge key="input.x11_options.XkbRules" type="string">evdev</merge>
<merge key="input.x11_options.XkbModel" type="string">evdev</merge>
<merge key="input.x11_driver" type="string">evdev</merge>
<merge key="input.x11_options.XkbLayout" type="string">fi</merge>
<merge key="input.x11_options.XkbVariant" type="string"></merge>
<merge key="input.x11_options.XkbOptions" type="string">altwin:menu</merge>
</match>
</deviceinfo>
|
I think the append lines in the file above made the biggest difference. _________________ Everything can be done. There's just a longer delivery time for impossible projects. |

Actually, those callouts.add are most probably meaningless.
Did you try validating your previous fdi file ? |

nope. How do I do that?
rantmode:
Argh. I hate this. There is information in bit's and pieces here and there. Someone ought to write concise instructions. And I mean those who release the software. It is not alright that the users have to figure it all out themselves.

Well after all what is important is that I get the system working alright. Also maybe I did not look at the right places... I now found the freedesktop.org guide which seems to clear some things: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/tree/config/x11-input.fdi _________________ Everything can be done. |
|
I have two keyboards attached to my PC: one keyboard with a belgian azerty layout (and I want this to be the default layout as almost all of my keyboards have this). The other one a querty keyboard. With hal and evedev it is possible to support both layouts simultaneously. The solution lies in having a <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.keys"> to define the default layout, followed by a <match key="info.udi" contains="xxxxxx"> to uniquely identify each keyboard with a deviating layout. the value of xxxx can be read with lshal.
The thread https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-766415-highlight-.html contains the details. and both a solution with one .fdi and with 2 .fdi files.
The solution with one .fdi file looks like:
Code: | <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> <!-- -*- SGML -*- -->
<!-- default configuration for keyboards = belgian azerty keyboard -->
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
<device>
<match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.keys">
<merge key="input.x11_options.XkbRules" type="string">base</merge>
<!-- If we're using Linux, we use evdev by default (falling back to kbd otherwise). -->
<merge key="input.x11_driver" type="string">kbd</merge>
<merge key="input.x11_options.XkbModel" type="string">pc105</merge>
<match key="/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer:system.kernel.name" string="Linux">
<merge key="input.x11_driver" type="string">evdev</merge>
<merge key="input.x11_options.XkbModel" type="string">evdev</merge>
</match>
<merge key="input.x11_options.XkbLayout" type="string">be</merge>
<merge key="input.x11_options.XkbVariant" type="string" />
</match>
<!-- only specify the keys that deviate from the default (be) keyboard -->
<match key="info.udi" contains="usb_device_4d9_22_noserial">
<merge key="input.x11_options.XkbLayout" type="string">us</merge>
<merge key="input.x11_options.XkbVariant" type="string" />
</match>
</device>
</deviceinfo> |

I followed the description of d2_racing and it works almost perfectly.
But I don't have repeat on the two keys <left> and <down>. All other keys does repeat as expected, including the numeric keypad located <left> and <down>.
Anyone having the same problem - and hopefully a solution? _________________ /Kim |

@ Icer,
I agree 1000% with your rant!
I have been trying to make accents work with right alt like I had before,
for more than two days now.
Why can we not have normal config files?
This hal fdi files is crazy!
Gerard.
Edit: I give up.
I will remove evdev and go back to the classic xorg.conf. _________________ To install Gentoo I use sysrescuecd.Based on Gentoo,has firefox to browse Gentoo docs and mc to browse (and edit) files.

@kjersin: that sounds vaguely familiar.
How much of this thread did you read ?
Post standard info: hal settings, 'setxkbmap -print' output, etc. |

@VoidMage, actually most of it, but didn't find anything about repeat. But if You have, then please give me a pointer to the actual text.
I found some information on topic "Key repeat not working in Gnome [solved]".
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-744806-highlight-repeat.html
The solution apparently should be to upgrade xf86-input-evdev (x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev-2.2.0-r1). But I'm allready using 2.2.2 and still having the problem. It seams to be a configuration issue which is fixed in xorg 1.5 but reapers in 1.6 (see more at https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=261947#c4).
Currently the fix seams to be to set the repeat of the keys manually:
xset r 113
xset r 115
xset r 116 _________________ /Kim |

I just tried upgrading another machine and have yet another disaster (which I shall refrain from starting a new thread about).
Basically, hal is not seeing either the (standard ps/2) keyboard or the mouse (at least that I can tell via lshal).
Fortunately, I know the short term workaround due to this thread:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-766367.html
But I would still like to get it fixed. |

I'm having the same problem. I stopped my Gentoo installation 'cause I couldn't get Xorg to detect my keyboard and mouse. After using a friends Mac to ssh to my box, I could kill Xorg and make sure the problem was the input devices not been detected.
Anyway, I'm now back to standard xorg.conf configuration, with default kbd and mouse drivers, just so I can continue the installation. I'm also migrating to unstable (~amd64), it seems that xorg-1.7 has better detection of devices.
Anyway, I have hal in my make.conf and emerge --info correctly report my use flags, xorg-server is already compiled with hal use flag, I've enabled evdev in my kernel (and recompiled and booted into the new kernel) and, as my last hope, I've added myself to the plugdev group. I've read about root needing to be ni plugdev also, due to a bug on gdm, but I'm not at this stage yet, I'm running Xorg from my user's terminal with startx.
My last guess, as of right now, is that I'm missing some kernel configuration for keyboard and mouse auto-detection. lshal doesn't seem to report any keyboard or mouse, even though it reports lots of buses and usb ports. My mouse is connected through usb, btw, and my keyboard through ps/2.
Anyone could help me? I'm really inclined to migrating to evdev, but Xorg is getting me crazy. |

Is hald running?
Have you tried starting X without xorg.conf or with a minimal xorg.conf containing only the device section for the video card? |

In fact, you should post this :
Code: |
# emerge --info
# rc-update show
|
Running without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf is the best way to start debugging. |

I'm running with HAL and DBUS use flags, checked in emerge --info (probably from 2008.0 desktop profile). Tried without xorg.conf, no luck. Verified Ubuntu 9.04 livecd configs, they use xorg-server 1.6.X, simple xorg.conf and work flawlessly.
I'm using INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse evdev", but I've read that evdev should be enough after X is configured for hal.
Both hald and dbus are added to boot runlevel using rc-update add XXX boot.
I'm into some trouble with OpenRC, so I'll post here again in some days, after I get my box to boot again. Running into read-only filesystem problems... |

|
|
Hi, I'm having strange touchpad problem on one of my laptops since I upgraded to xorg-server-1.5 (crrently 1.6.3, but still the same).
Symptoms: everything works just fine, touchpad, keyboard, but after cca 30 seconds X consumes 100% of cpu and the computer is unusable ...
What is strange: the problem does not occur when I plug in USB mouse before starting X. Even more strange: when I later unplug the USB mouse, after cca 30 seconds the X again takes 100% cpu.
There is nothing suspicious in dmesg, log nor Xorg.log ...
I tried almost everything, xorg without edev and hal or with, different versions of xorg, hal, dubus, evdev and synaptics but nothing seemed to work ...
This is Acer TravelMate 8000 and I have also Acer Aspire 5021 also with synaptic touchpad and on the second one there is absolutely no problem. The two computers are configured identically, although first is x86 and second x86_64.
Any ideas, hints?

the only suspicious line in Xorg.log is this one:
Code: |
[config/dbus] couldn't take over org.x.config: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied (Connection ":1.8" is not allowed to own the service "org.x.config.display0" due to security policies in the configuration file)

but I'm getting this also with the USB mouse (i.e. when I dont see the problem) and also the second laptop has this line.. |

it's the same, but I'll verify once more with the new version of xorg
yesterday I was playing with all the

maybe I need some kind of dbus/hal debugger? |

... and remember to rebuild your x11-drivers Code: | emerge --oneshot $(qlist -I -C x11-drivers) |
...also you could try with consolekit. It fixes alot of stuff.
Code: | emerge consolekit
rc-update add consolekit default
/etc/init.d/consolekit start | |

x11-drivers are for sure up-to-date; I have just radeon, evdev and synaptics
consolekit is installed but the daemon is not running, I'll try that
edit:
starting xorg without xorg.conf = same behavior
starting xorg with consoletoolkit = same behavior |

I was getting that error earlier, it seems that when I upgraded to xorg 1.6.3 it put its xorg-server.conf in /etc/X11/dbus-1/system.d and
it really belongs in /etc/dbus-1/system.d. I copied it to where it belongs and it shut up about the Access Denied.

Awesome fix. I hadn't even noticed that I was getting that Access Denied message in the log again since upgrading xorg 1.6.3. I'll remember that one. Thanks. |

Hi! Thanks to this post, I've configured correctly the new configuration of xserver with hal and evdev. But I observed that when I'm exiting of the system (Gnome desktop environment), the mouse and keyboard become freeze, and the the screen don't show information about the stopping process of the services. Always it is shown the desktop wallpaper until the system is shut down definitely. Has anyone seen this problem? Here, I show some of my configuration files to give more information
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
Code: |

Identifier "X.org Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
EndSection
