I'm going to be installing Linux onto a small box that I'm building and I want to know if gentoo has optimized/fully-supported drivers for every NIC that it has listed on their cd images. I'm going to buy an Intel PRO/100 S Server Adapter and want to know in advance if gentoo supports its features (such as 168-bit hardware encryption) and have optimized "drivers" (what do you call them in Linux?) for the Intel network chipset.

I have the same card in my machine right now, and yes, it is supported by both the eepro100 kernel driver and intel's own e100 driver. The e100 driver allows far more tweaking than the eepro100 driver, but I do not think it supports hardware encryption. I've only used the eepro100 driver, but I would assume that the e100 driver is fine too, since linus has it in the vanela kernel sources.
