Try the evdev driver for the keyboard and mouse.

From xorg.0.log
Quote:
(WW) AllowEmptyInput is on, devices using drivers 'kbd' or 'mouse' will be disabled.
(WW) Disabling Mouse0
(WW) Disabling Keyboard0
This is disabling the keyboard and mouse. Hal should be configuring the keyboard and mouse to use the evdev driver but I do not see that in the log.

Quote:
(WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory)
If you are using hal and acpi, starting hald and acpid using the same run level will fix this.

See https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=239092

this being a desktop comp i did not think acpid is required.
as it says i have not configured any acpi related files.
the same is true for the other install in the same desktop. only in another partition. which works fine.
in laptop acpid and hal are both started at default level.

the only thing noted from bugzilla is that xf86-inptut-fdi to be emerged. i can try that.
i will check the hal useflags also.

it is still not clear why the xorg-server would not emerge hal also with required useflags and fdi if needed. :(

I was hit by this idiotic behavior of X today. I chose not to use evdev mainly for two reasons:

  • I have no reason to do so.
  • I don't have the time to deal with the migration (no, it doesn't work out of the box for a non-english keyboard at least.

Following my policy of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", I continue running xf86-input-keyboard and xf86-input-mouse without a single problem, except those "problems" created by hal itself. I don't complain, I understand that if I decide to run a non-standard setup I got to keep the pieces myself.

To the point, I saw the warning in the log, and just tried the obvious:

Code:
Option "AllowEmptyInput" "false"

In my xorg.conf, which seems to work.

I had the same, this morning. And after a few tries of reemerging x11-drivers/xf86-input-mouse and x11-drivers/xf86-input-keyboard I ended up masking xorg and downgrading to 1.5.2 and all was well again. I will take a look at this solution later this week. Thanks.

[EDIT]BTW, I am using a US keyboard and still had this bad behavior... [/EDIT]

My comment about non-english keyboard was aimed to the migration to evdev. I am still using kdb/mouse because of that. When X decided to automatically load evdev, my keyboard layout was all messed. I just don't feel (yet) like researching how to configure it, being the lazy guy that I am. So I just uninstalled evdev and forced X to use the old keyboard and mouse drivers, which works without a problem for me.

I replied about that because it appears that the other user is also using non us keyboards and the bug report is also about that (i believe).

i use US keyboard layout.
the server is changing to non-US key board. i think.
for the time being i will use the 1.5.2 server which work ok.
the other 2 installations did not have any complaint at all with 1.5.3
probably it has something to do with hal useflags.
i will investigate in all 3 of them and get back.

This is indeed the correct fix. I got hit by it as well. IMHO a really stupid change for a minor version update...

A painful one if you ask me.

No way to go back to console plus acpid not responding for some odd reason == hard reboot, with all the risk and hassle that poses. However, as I said, I can't complain since I am both in ~arch and using an unusual setup.

I got around that by using the laptop to ssh in to the desktop to kill gdm.

my xorg.conf does not show any option line like that either false or true

i have tried addin the line juast above the videodriver intel.

i will try booting. now i am in a chroot env for emerging xorg-server.[the faulty one into working gentoo.

Put that in

I have it like this:
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier     "X.org Configured"
    Screen      0  "Screen0" 0 0
    InputDevice    "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
    InputDevice    "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
    Option         "AllowEmptyInput" "false"
EndSection

But I guess both sections should work.

thanks for this advice.
drescherjm :)
i have introduced new setion server flags as shown above.
part of the current xog, conf is shown. and confirmed the new serer is active .

is this the permanent solution?
if so may i mark thread solved?
this post i made from the new server working in previously not working install.
surprisingly the other 2 working install did not require any such addition in xorg.conf.

That would be fine.
I guess if anyone else does not have a ServerFlags section they could use ServerLayout like yngwin suggested. So they did not have to make a new section. I already had the ServerFlags so I just added the line.

I don't quite understand what Option "AllowEmptyInput" "false" means. Does it tell Xorg to ignore hal/evdev and instead use InputDevice sections from xorg.conf or does it do something else? Without it my mouse/keyboard/touchpad don't work. With it my keyboard/touchpad are stuck with default settings whatever I put in /etc/hal/fdi/[...], i.e. «us» keyboard layout (I want «be» instead) and I can only move the pointer with the touchpad (no drag, no scroll, no two-finger-scroll).
