the solar plugin has a blue star and every process associated with startup becomes a solar flare, it looks lush

I youtube'd it... eh, doesn't float my boat much (I'm still enough of a grognard I like my box to stay in console mode all the way up until it's ready for me to log in), but it's sorta pretty.

It depends on kernel mode setting and GEM. KMS will be in the kernel in 2.6.29 which will be out sometime next year.

Yes and no.

While it will make good use of KMS support if it is enabled, you can still use it with a standard framebuffer bootup by appending "vga=0x318" (or some other similarly applicable arguments) to your kernel parameters.

It's quite blingy, in a definitely awesome way. :)

So what's it do when something fails to start? Does a solar flare sort of sputter and fuck up, not flaring like it's supposed to?

What happens on kernel panic? Does it nova?

From the Fedora wiki:
Quote:
Plymouth will requires DRM kernel modesetting drivers to get pretty graphics, but will have a text mode fallback for systems without driver support.

And the whole point of Plymouth is to support KMS for a flicker-free boot.
