Quote:
# emerge -vp xv

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild FU ] media-gfx/xv-3.10a-r4 [3.10a-r3] +jpeg +tiff +png +zlib +X

I can't find the meaning of the F neiher in the man page nor in the online doc.

emerge wants tells you, you need to download the sources manually. :wink:

I actually have a problem with xv-3.10a-r4
If I do an emerge -p xv I get:
[ebuild RF ] media-gfx/xv-3.10a-r4
At first I didn't think too much about the F flag, but after I have emerged xv it cannot show jpeg files...??
I have tried with a gif file, and it showes nicely, but it cannot show any of my jpeg files (it's not a problem with the files themself, because mozilla showes them just fine)

Any suggestions...??

There is indeed a RESTRICT=fetch in the ebuild, hence the F even though I had another word in my mind ;-)

I did not download the source but it is there.
Besides, there is no F flag when I try emerge -vp vmware-workstation winex-transgaming for which I would have to download the files myself.

It looks like I should get the patch for jpeg6 ftp://ftp.cis.upenn.edu/pub/xv/xv-3.10a.JPEG-patch

But then what ? Why can't emerge get it itself ?

Download it manually. The ebuild should give you the website URL.
Because there is some software you can't download until you read a license and click 'I Agree'.

It does when you do emerge xv.

The confusing bit was that the F flag is not used consistently.
For instance:
emerge -vp winex-transgaming

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild N ] app-emulation/winex-transgaming-3.1 +cups +opengl

basil # emerge -v winex-transgaming
Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge (1 of 1) app-emulation/winex-transgaming-3.1 to /
>>> Unpacking source...
*
* Please download the appropriate WineX archive (winex3_3.1-1.i386.tgz)
* from: http://www.transgaming.com/ (requires a Transgaming subscription).
*
* The archive should be placed into /usr/portage/distfiles.
*

!!! ERROR: app-emulation/winex-transgaming-3.1 failed.
!!! Function src_unpack, Line 32, Exitcode 0
!!! package archive (winex3_3.1-1.i386.tgz) not found

'F' is not displayed for winex-transgaming but a similar message is diplayed when you do emerge...
