I have scoured the forums as well as google, and can't come up with any explanation for my problem apart from bad hardware. My Geforce 4 MX440 (64M) outputs DVI fine at console with the vesa fb kernel driver (1280x1024, the native res for my new LCD). When I fire up x, the monitor displays the "no signal" message, and yet it does start up the desktop and everything as I can hear my kde startup sound. As far as X is concerned, everything seems to be fine -- no fatal errors in the log.
Luckily, I was able to get a hold of a Geforce FX 5200 (128M) easily enough to just drop it in for a test. It worked! X came right up and DVI looks great. So what does this tell us? Either there's something I've missed here, or I've got a bad video card -- but vesa fb runs with DVI fine at 1280x1024!
