I'm still using Firefox 2 on my system mostly out of laziness to upgrade to Firefox 3. Is Firefox 3 stable on Gentoo yet? Will all of my plugins work? If so, should I see 2 versions in portage right now: 3.0-r1 and 3.0.4. Is there any issue with either of these? |

I've been using it since about a week or two after it was released (however many months ago) and have not had any problems with it that I didn't already have with firefox 2 (which was few, if any). Gentoo may not have stabilized it yet, but I would certainly argue it is very safe to use in comparison to FF2. |

safe to use, and abiding by gentoo stabilisation policies are two different things.
A package can ONLY go stable if it has no more bugs open against it (for 30days) and all its dependencies are stable _________________

Very true, but I'm only arguing that I haven't had (nor have I heard of) any serious problems with it. Is it "stable" according to Gentoo? No. But realistically speaking, it is definitely safe to use - plugins and addons included (sans a few add ons which only support FF2, but those will tell you what they are on its add on page)[/quote] |

Oh I agree, I have used FF3 from the moment it entered ~ARCH (running ~amd64 here)
its just gentoo's policy. It use to be a bit more gun-ho with packages entering stable (and hence where gentoo got its "bleeding edge" tag from) but after soo much badgering on bugzy, forums, irc stable got made alot more stable and thus gentoo "seems" to have lost its "bleeding edge" association (even tho ~ARCH is still more upto date then most distro's...)
lesser of two evils if you ask me. It will me made stable soon enough. For those that want it and cannot wait for it to go stable, there are means to selectively run "unstable" packages _________________

I hear you there. I run Kubuntu on my laptop and they've already upgraded to FF3 (and did quite a while ago, actually). On a COMPLETELY side note, the Ubuntu developers have also included KDE4 as the default for 8.10, and I can now see that it really should be given some more time before that one is considered 'stable'. |
