The latest stable portage does not handle this on its own - I just tried to update a system that hadn't been updated in a while. Started with installing the latest stable portage, but still had the block.

I also noticed it's still happening even today, and even without mit-krb5 installed. I guess the bug is still outstanding but at least the solution posted here fixes it :)

I'm in dire need of help here. I ran into the blocking issue, and followed the steps outline here: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=234907#c7:

Code:

1. emerge -NuDav --fetchonly world
2. emerge -C ss com_err e2fsprogs
3. emerge -NuDav --nodeps e2fsprogs-libs e2fsprogs
4. echo "sys-libs/com_err" >>/etc/portage/package.mask
5. echo "sys-libs/ss" >>/etc/portage/package.mask
6. echo "sys-libs/com_err-1.40.11" >>/etc/portage/profile/package.provided
7. echo "sys-libs/ss-1.40.11" >>/etc/portage/profile/package.provided

Now after a boot, I'm getting this on startup:

Code:

  * Mounting proc and /proc                                  [oops]
  * The "mount" operation failed with this error:

error while loading shared libraries: libblkid.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

I think I followed that same bug report too.... hence me starting this thread as i had similar results to you and I didn't find a way to fix my PC :-(

You could try using a Gentoo LiveCD and seeing if you can chroot in and emerge the required tools that way?

I could do that, but I'm not sure what the required packages would be in this case.

I'd start with

Code:
# emerge -f e2fsprogs-libs e2fsprogs
# emerge e2fsprogs-libs e2fsprogs

And reboot to see what happens.

This is not fixed. I made a new installation (x86) from a 2008.0-r1 image downloaded yesterday.
Did
Code:
emerge --sync

Upgraded portage to the stable version (2.1.6.4) which is supposed to have the fix, and tried to emerge system:
Code:
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

I can fix this -- I did on my other systems -- but someone who is installing Gentoo for the first time would definitely have problems.

Did you notice the small 'b' in your output:

Code:
[ebuild     U ] sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.41.3-r1 [1.40.8] USE="nls (-static%)" 4,263 kB
[blocks b     ] <sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.41 ("<sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.41" is blocking sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.3-r1)
[blocks B     ] sys-libs/com_err ("sys-libs/com_err" is blocking sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.3-r1)
[blocks B     ] sys-libs/ss ("sys-libs/ss" is blocking sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.3-r1)

Code:
b   blocked by another package (automatically resolved conflict)

With the latest version of Portage installed this should get fixed on its own :D

Rich.

Yes. But there are two large 'B's which are unsatisfied blocks. "emerge system" will not work. As I said, I can fix this. But someone new to Gentoo would not have a clue.

What options you used for portage as I get this output:

Code:
[ebuild     U ] sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.41.3-r1 [1.40.8] USE="nls (-static%)" 0 kB
[blocks b     ] <sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.41 ("<sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.41" is blocking sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.3-r1)
[uninstall    ] sys-libs/com_err-1.40.8  USE="nls"
[blocks b     ] sys-libs/com_err ("sys-libs/com_err" is blocking sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.3-r1)
[uninstall    ] sys-libs/ss-1.40.8  USE="nls"
[blocks b     ] sys-libs/ss ("sys-libs/ss" is blocking sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.3-r1)

Total: 67 packages (56 upgrades, 10 new, 1 in new slot, 2 uninstalls), Size of downloads: 0 kB
Conflict: 3 blocks

It tells me that portage handle the uninstallation of the two packages causing problems.

Rich

Neither do I. But for reference if someone else has the same problem, here is what I did to solve it:
Code:
emerge -av e2fsprogs
emerge --fetchonly bc e2fsprogs-libs e2fsprogs
emerge -av e2fsprogs
emerge -Ca com_err ss
emerge -av e2fsprogs
etc-update
revdep-rebuild
etc-update
revdep-rebuild
emerge -av system

The second revdep-rebuild did not find anything, so it may be unnecessary.
You need gentoolkit to run revdep-rebuild.
The final emerge is still running, but there were no blocks.

Ya, I had the same problem and eventually solved it. It was the second most annoy bug in gentoo, next to the compats fiasco. But I eventually solve that with help from the forums as well.

I'll start this off by saying that I realize this is going to sound like an incredibly stupid question (and I have been following this thread), but after a few "close calls" too many in the past whenever doing an update to Gentoo (at least, the past few times), I'm not willing to try and risk taking anymore chances--however, I know I'm going to have to try and get past this and am going to need to update things.

Admittedly, after the problems associated with this happened to someone I know, I tried to avoid doing any updates since October. Especially as I haven't access to a rescue or even Live CD nor a burner at the moment and basically spend almost all my time in Gentoo and therefore can't risk being without it.

Having said that, I did update portage to the latest version of it (1Q-2009) and am getting the error message regarding the blocked packages with respect to com_err and ss with e2fsprogs and want to know what would be the "easiest" method to use to get past this issue without potentially "hosing" my system in the process? I can't just seem to emerge e2fsprogs without getting the blocked packages notice.

Thanks in advance for any help on this! :)

It also depends what size "B" is on the line when portage tells you its blocked.

If its a "b" (lower case) then portage should deal with it on its own. If its a "B" (capital) the you need to do things in a specific order to resolve your issue.

Dealing with it on your own requires following the steps that "desultory" posted. You need to make sure you fetch your packages before downloading as the upgrade can break wget if you don't.

Hope this helps.

Rich.

Thank you, both! :) I'm about to try it out.

In answer to the small "b" versus capital "B" situation with this, both those packages are showing up as capital "B" for me--so I'm going to have to go through with the steps posted.

Also, to answer what may sound like another stupid question, I'm assuming once e2fsprogs and e2fsprogs-libs are emerged, I won't have to (nor should have to?) re-emerge any of the packages that were removed?

I remember from the coreutils disaster that one of the packages involved was there to replace one of the packages being removed and just wanted to know if this was the situation or not?

both the e2fsprogs and e2fsprogs-libs packages replace the ss and com_err ones removed so there's nothing to re-install or re-emerge after.

It is just important, no its vital, that you "emerge -f" before you unmerge the old packages otherwise wget won't work and you can't download them.

Good luck :-)

Thanks as well for the clarification about the packages.

I just experienced a little excitement with this update on a significantly out of date machine - when I got to the last emerge of e2fspogs tar started segmentation faulting, thankfully I had another amd64 system to copy an up to date version of /bin/tar from. So be wary if updating an old machine...

if you upgrade your app-crypt/mit-krb5 to 1.6.3-r2 you won't be asked to re-install ss or com_err as it knows to use e2fsprogs

I see that version 1.6.3-r6 of mit-krb5 is available.

I'm having the blocking problem this thread alludes to...should I follow the steps to the keywords portion, but, use this version instead of the older on listed?

TIA,

cayenne :?:

You don't need to keyword now that a more recent version of app-crypt/mit-krb5 is available.

The app-crypt/mit-krb5-1.6.3-r2 release was the first to use the new e2fsprogs-libs rather than the com_err/ss combo.
