Hey peeps,
Long time since I've posted on these forums. Has anyone tried 2.6.28-rc1 yet? I tried it today and found my CD/DVD drive didn't work, found a patch that fixed it (commited after -rc1), and I have noticed my kernel and init boots MUCH faster than with 2.6.27.

a objective comparison of boot times would be nice, e.g. with app-benchmarks/bootchart. |

I have skimmed through the changelog and found some notes about "fastboot patches"
in other words, things are speeding up as more things are done in parallel

I had a rough time booting 2.6.28-rc1 on my amd64 machine.
Vesafb seemed to be broken, and libata was giving me a lot of timeouts while probing the DVD drives, plus it crashed on shutdown.
So, for now, I am crawling back to 2.6.27.3 |

cyrillic,
The ATA timeouts only effects SATA (and maybe PATA?) devices that don't support NCQ, and the issue is fixed as of rc1-git1. _________________ 2.6.35 / Gnome 2.30

I guess the kernel devs noticed some problems with -rc1, so they pushed out -rc2 in a hurry.
I didn't notice any speed improvements with 2.6.28-rc2, but then my machine was pretty fast already. |
