python died, can't use portage or do much else

I had changed my python use flags (in /etc/portage/package.use) to:
dev-lang/python build bootstrap doc

The emerge stopped midway. I then removed doc from the use flags and attempted to re-emerge but I then started getting the following error:

localhost bill # emerge python
bash: /usr/bin/emerge: /usr/bin/python: bad interpreter: No such file or directory

Unfortunately, it seems like I can't do anything to get past this - any emerge appears to rely on python and I can't get it to work.

My kernel is 2.6.25-r8.

Why did you add build and bootstrap?

If you have another system running Gentoo (same arch) you could create a binary package and unpack it on your crashed system

I was going to try something in R that alledgedly required both, although now I wish I just used the server version for it, since portage is now quite dead.
