I have emerged vlc with the help of wiki.
I have selected my avi file and right clicked, then clicked on open with other application. I then clicked use custom command and typed vlc.
I can now just click on an avi file and it will play.
My question is how do I open vlc as a program. I can not find the menu or anything. Should there not be an icon somewhere so I can open the program by it's self and not just via an avi file.

In case you use KDE, I had it under Multimedia in the K Menu. No idea about Gnome, though. |

In Gnome it's under Applications/ Sound and Video/ Vlc.
But I can't remember whether I created the entry or the system did it automatically when I emerged it.
In order for the player to have a gui be sure you have the correct useflags (wxwindows, gnome) enabled. Gnome alone is not enough, it seems to need the wxwindows as well.
After that it should show up in Gnome just fine. _________________ Kali Ma

I am using Xfce4, I do have wxwindows in the use flag.
How do you make the link manually and also how do you open the menu when you are playing a video? |

If you have vlc-0.9.* you need the qt4 useflag instead of wxwindows. _________________ "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." - Abraham Lincoln
