...for linux and for ~120-170$ ?
something like GF 9800GT or ATI can be considered too?

For linux... I'd stick with nVidia. They currently have the best driver support, even if it's closed source. Maybe that will change (ATI) in the future, but it hasn't yet. |

for linux nvidia is the best choice at the moment and it will probably stay that way for some time. _________________ i7 3930K @ 4GHz

And what would be typical problems with latest ATI cards? |

Dunno. I'm not saying the ATI cards are bad, it's just that the nvidia driver support is better than what's available for ATI even if the nVidia driver is proprietary. ATI cards, especially the newer ones may very well be better hardware than the nVidia products, but without a good Linux driver what's the point of getting one?
When spec'ing out a linux machine that'll be using a desktop environment, I always pick an nvidia solution. Saves me headaches. Maybe ATI driver support is better than it was a year or two ago, but I KNOW what I'm getting with nVidia on linux. |
