Yep, noticed that too. I upgraded today with only one problem. gnome-extra/gnome-user-docs wouldn't install, but I only had to clear out /var/tmp/portage for it to work correctly. Now it's all installed and running fine. |

I also had a problem getting gnome-user-docs to install, but cleaning /usr/tmp/portage didn't help. This fix worked for me:
Code: | MAKEOPTS=-j1 emerge -1 gnome-user-docs |
I found the solution here https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=255479. |

Works for me. (TM)
Granted, I still have 2.24 and the rest of an upgraded x86 in a chroot waiting to transfer over to my wife's laptop, but it all emerged cleanly. I can only assume that it would work. _________________ What's the worst that can happen? |

Do you actually know, or are you just saying that? I don't know either, but I will give you my view.
- X86 is a big platform. If the Gentoo guys screw up, they will have to deal with a magintude more bugs than from the other platforms
- There are likely some last minute blockers they're dealing with. This would have nothing to do with testers.
Patience is a virtue my friend. I had my PPC start upgrading but it is stuck unable to compile totem with a totem-pl-parser problem and gnome-control-center with a "set_bg_properties" problem. I actually wish they would have waited a little longer for PPC. But still, good work guys. I know this isn't easy. |

no, i was just saying that. Usually x86 goes stable first. but you are right, there is nothing urgent. i can wait. |

Good news juniper, it looks like it went stable on X86. I'm upgrading now. |

Minor bug:
Anyone notice that there is no documentation for the Screen Resolution (gnome-display-properties) tool from gnome-control-center? When I hit "Help" nothing happens; it's indexed in the overall documentation, but clicking on the search link about screen resolution is also no-op.
Reading the ebuild, looks like an omission by upstream ...
Now that Screen Resolution can exploit RandR for external monitors, I wanted to read the help to learn more about it! _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

Same here. For me that is the biggest difference between "stable" and ~amd64 with gnome. Since my /etc/portage/package.keywords is a folder and inside that folder there is a link to my gnome-2.24 keywords this will be as easy as deleting the link but keeping the file so that in a few weeks I can begin to add 2.26 keywords.. _________________ John

Some more things I have noticed (more serious):
* gnome-phone-manager crashes upon launch
* bug-buddy can't send the email when I tried to use it I have rebuilt it, thinking that there was some conflict with the Evolution data server interface, but haven't tested it since I already filed the gnome-phone-manager bug manually.
* Now that epiphany is exclusively xulrunner (before I was using firefox), it's as if the threading doesn't work -- when one window/tab is awaiting a response from the server, all the others are non-responsive. _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

I just upgraded tp gnome 2.24 today.
the installation went fine. I just hat to restart the update process "emerge world -uDNpv" some times. after that the compilation went fine.
As I start gnome via startx (Gnome is used via Xsession) I get an error about too many restarts from the gnome-settings-daemon.
Bug buddy will pop up and I can click cancel, the desktop remains. But with some very basic theme and stuff.
Also if I want to launch appereance manager I get the error, that the settings daemon is not running.
It says it could be a problem with Bonobo or some none gnome software.
I can't get any other error message. not from error log or X log.
Right now I use Xfce, but I want by gnome back....
since there is no "real" error message, I'm really lost. _________________ My personal space

Same problem as well with gnome-settings-daemon since I've upgraded. Impossible to use gnome anymore as it will close automatically.
Any clue?
[EDIT] I managed to keep a session open for few minutes.
Code: | $ /usr/libexec/gnome-settings-daemon --no-daemon --sync
The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadClass, invalid event class'.
(Details: serial 229 error_code 181 request_code 149 minor_code 6)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
[1237227903,000,xklavier.c:xkl_engine_start_listen/] The backend does not require manual layout management - but it is provided by the application |
[EDIT 2] I've just downgraded to x11-libs/libxklavier-3.6 (3.8 was installed) and it fixed the problem with gnome-settings-daemon. |

Downgrading brought me forward as well
Now it looks like I have an incorrect screen resolution, but the error message from Gnome-settings daemon is gone. |

Downgrading worked for me too. Maybe it's case to file a bugreport about this one.

I have not had that problem since I have begun using gnome-2.24 in November, however I am using x11-libs/libxklavier-3.6
Code: | jmd0 ~ # equery list x11-libs/libxklavier
[ Searching for package 'libxklavier' in 'x11-libs' among: ]
* installed packages
[I--] [ ] x11-libs/libxklavier-3.6 (0) |

I think that 3.8 is marked stable for X86 while not for AMD64. |

Thanks. If I remember I will mask it tonight to prevent a stabilization effort from breaking my machine...
[EDIT]
Done:
Code: | echo "=x11-libs/libxklavier-3.8*" >> /etc/portage/package.mask/local |

I upgraded gnome last night, and now I get a segfault trying to launch any gnome app.
gnome-about
strace output is too long to post , but doesn't tell me much about the crash, but here is a bit of the strace up to the crash
Code: |
open("/usr/lib/charset.alias", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
open("/usr/share/locale/locale.alias", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 3
fstat64(3, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=2570, ...}) = 0
mmap2(NULL, 4096, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0xb7eff000
read(3, "# Locale name alias data base.\n# "..., 4096) = 2570
read(3, ""..., 4096) = 0
close(3) = 0
munmap(0xb7eff000, 4096) = 0
<snip>
fstat64(8, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0600, st_size=6025, ...}) = 0
munmap(0xb7eff000, 4096) = 0
--- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) @ 0 (0) ---

What can I do? |

An obvious question but still, did you revdep-rebuild? |

yes. Nothing needs to be rebuilt.
I uninstalled python-2.4, ran python-updater, and revdep-rebuild, and again nothing to reinstall.
I noticed that I have gnome-light meta package installed after reading this:
"how to update gnome-light to 2.24?"
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-710476-highlight-gnomebase+gnomelight.html
It says I'm SOL since gnome-light-2.24 doesn't work right.
Last night my update brought a lot of gnome apps up to 2.24, including evolution, which converted my email to sqlite, so I probably can't downgrade.
It looks like maybe I need to replace gnome-base/gnome-light with gnome-base/gnome to get this working again. |
