I had a problem to use apm power management on my IBM Thinkpad 390
and i have found a way for resolve this. If any user have the same problem i describe the solution in this message

To enable the power managenement on a Thinkpad 390 you must compile your kernel with APM support builtin not as a module. If you compile apm support as a module, modprobe fails to load the module.

After compiling the new kernel, install it on /boot and don't forget to create the device apm_bios like this :

- logon as root
- cd /dev
- mknod apm_bois c 10 134

reboot your computer and then :

- logon as root
- emerge apm
- rc-update add apm defaults

that's all

If you want to use apm power with KDE :

- logon as root
- cd /usr/bin
- chmod +s apmd

A lot of thanks to Gentoo, it is great !!!
