I have two machines running gnome 2, on one of these I get an error when I load the panel applet "System Monitor".

Have tried to re-emerge gnome-applets, also tried to unmerge all of gnome 1.4 and gnome2 and then re-emerge gnome. Same trouble every time. I suspect that I need to re-emerge some libs or somethin but don't know where to start. The error I get loading the applet is:

Application "multiload-applet-2" (process 19119) has crashed
due to a fatal error.
(Trace/breakpoint trap)

After this (I click OK) I get this message:

The System Monitor applet appears to have died unexpectedly

Reload this applet?

(If you choose not to reload it at this time you can always add it by right clicking on the panel and clicking on the "Add to panel" submenu)

Maybe the panel is the problem. Re-emerge gnome-panel. But please send me a backtrace of the crash. There are some people at bugzilla.gnome.org looking for backtraces of such problems. Or just submit it at: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=86354

I guess now it's too late. The easiest way is to use the functionality of BugBuddy - who pops up after each crash. the other way is using strace, but you must have it emerged before use.

Sorry to say it didn't help, but I submitted a bug report... Perhaps I should reinstall the machine.

Is there someway to say, reinstall the whole system, just by backing up the config files and reapply after? Maybe that would sort out library problems and such... :)

You could look directly into the Gnome2 ebuild script and unmerge all files & libs listed in there. Then I would try installing Gnome2 again. I think that's rather a compilation issue than a lihrary problem.

Is there a Gnome2 ebuild file? All I find are the items under gnome-extra and gnome-base! :)

Allready tried to go into these dirs and do a "emerge unmerge *". As far as I can see this removes all of the gnome packages. But still after a new merge no success ... Is there a list of deps that are common for gnome? Maybe I should unmerge and merge these too... ?

Think I need to read more about this tool. But basically what you tell me is that I should unmerge all of these, and then try a merge gnome again... ?

I edited the above list. I would also unmerge those mentioned libs and try to re-emerge all this stuff.
