I'm thinking of buying some ECC ram... at the moment the shop I go to only has Registered ECC ram available.

My motherboard (Gigabyte GA-5AX, ALi Aladdin V) explicitly supports pc100 ECC SDRAM. But it says nothing about supporting registered modules?

Can I still use a registered module?

Also the shop only has pc133 in stock, will it function on a pc100 motherboard? my friends tell me that it probably will...

Please leave your answer even if somebody already answered my question, I'd really like to have multiple confirmations, before I buy...

Thanks,
DrZ

Newer pc133 memory is not always backwards compatible to pc100. You should definitely ask the seller this question before you buy...

All generic PC133 memory (i.e. not made for specific hardware) will work in a PC100 board. It will only run at PC100 speeds, of course, but it will run.

Here's a quote from TigerDirect's website on a generic PNY PC133 stick of memory....

Quote:

Note: PNY PC133 memory modules are not backwards compatible to PC100 or PC66

here is the link, check it out for yourself....

I suppose anything is possible, but I've used a lot of different memories in different systems and I've never had a problem.

ECC and particularly registered ECC are usually more picky about the system they run on. Therefore, while I can't say for sure, I would think that if the motherboards manual and website say nothing about supporting registered ECC memory then there's a good chance they won't work.

I have in the past as well, but this is some sort of new movement (last 6-8 months) so that the memory companies can get more money out of the consumer. Take a look at pc100 prices, they are quite a bit higher than the same memory size of pc133.

My advice drz, be cautious before you buy...

I haven't bought any memory for a while so you are probably right. Or it could be a tatic used by some dealers to get users to buy the more expensive memory that they claim will work with anything.
