I'm not getting sound from OSS4 on my Gateway notebook though per OSS4 everything appears to be set up ok.

Ossxmix is very pretty and the volume lights are moving up and down :) but it's missing a control for an "External Ampilifier" which has to be muted in alsamixer (when using Alsa) for me to get sound.

So I guess it's a matter of getting that control to show up & muting it.

Blessed be!

Hi Pappy,
You might find this interesting as I've seen many a helpful post by you. It's I reply I got on the 4Front forum http://www.4front-tech.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2828 I'm going to give ceslum's 2nd post a try. I had to put Alsa back on it so I would have sound today.

I didn't tell him that it was a Gentoo emerge -- can I still follow his directions as is?

Edit: It didn't work (details in above link). So I'm going to emerge oss-devel & try the 1st post.

btw: If instead of emerging dev-util/hgsvn & updating per the gentoo-wiki oss4 , I do a
Code:
 wget http://hg.atheme.org/users/majeru/portage-overlay
does that give me the same update?

Never mind that question - I just got
Code:
 emerge -av oss-devel

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild  N    ] dev-util/mercurial-1.0.1-r2  USE="bash-completion -bugzilla -cvs -darcs -emacs -git -gpg -subversion -test -zsh-completion" 0 kB
[ebuild  N    ] media-sound/oss-devel-9999  0 kB [1]
are there any USE flags I should be adding?

Thanks

That's great to hear. I tried oss4 out. It worked, but the driver for my sound card in oss4 doesn't support headphone installation shutting down the speakers. So, for the moment, I am back with alsa. I am hoping the oss4 people will fix this issue. I also hope it doesn't take them as long as it took the alsa devs to get the same problem fixed.

One more thing. Add oss to your USE files (if it isn't already there) and emerge -aDNuv world. That will install oss support into your sound packages.

Blessed be!
Pappy
