|
|
Hi, for some reason, I've lost CPU frequency scaling capbilities after updating the kernel. I have build all the powersaving things such as ACPI P-states driver into the kernel and i emerged cpufrequtils. but whenever i try to start cpufrequtils i get this error:
Code: |
/etc/init.d/cpufrequtils start
* Enabling ondemand cpufreq governor on CPU0 ...
[ !! ]unknown or unhandled CPU?
* Enabling ondemand cpufreq governor on CPU1 ...
[ !! ]unknown or unhandled CPU?
|
an fyi running: cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_governors
gives me: cat: /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_governors: No such file or directory |

This is probably some driver issues or missing some support to execute on ur cpu.To make clear what cpu we are talkin bout pls post.
P:S
There is a complete howto bout frequency scalling on wikis, that might help debug for general options needed to be enabled en so. _________________ ~x86

I've seen those wiki's, but they don't really help because i guess i have a different bug. Just an fyi though, cpu frequency scaling worked before. I just ran an emerge -uDN world and upgraded and redid the kernel. So i kinda suspect this is a kernel issue... |

Question:
How did u upgrade, like manually editing or just copyin over .config ?Nothing left on dmesg like a clue or so...??If it was working b4, you might want to downgrade to make sure that that version isnt working with u.
P:S
-ive masked all newer kernel version on my box, so im still stuck on 2.6.24.r8 as upgrading from there my last attempt was filled with some errors.
-A good practice on kernel-upgrade would be to keep a backup of your working kernel image everytime you upgrade.This helps if the newer image fails, you can easily go back to the working state en stay there.Thats what i would do if i dont have any reason why i should upgrade _________________ ~x86

I manually edited the kernel. Actually mostly redid it from scratch.
ok here's the dmesg output:

can you confirm that you have a governer enabled on ur kernel?
Quote: | Power management options --->
CPU Frequency scaling --->
# E.g. for ondemand
<*> 'ondemand' cpufreq policy governor |
I think Quote: | cat: /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_governors: No such file or directory | should show the list over there... _________________ ~x86

yea those options are configured into the kernel. I have them all hard coded in and not as modules. And cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_governors still gives me no such file/directory. |

Im suspecting this line, can you try to set a default governor and report if its working.Im still in big doubt why it gave no such a file Code: | cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_governors |
P:S
where does your kernel point to? Code: | ls -l /usr/src/linux | .Notice my driver is compiled as module, i have no reason to suspect but if you are running out of ideas you can try to compile the driver as modules.
Here is my setting for comparisons:
Quote: | # CPU Frequency scaling
#
CONFIG_CPU_FREQ=y
CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_TABLE=y
CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEBUG=y
CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_STAT=y
CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_STAT_DETAILS=y
CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT_GOV_PERFORMANCE=y

# CONFIG_X86_P4_CLOCKMOD is not set
# CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT_GOV_USERSPACE is not set
# CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT_GOV_ONDEMAND is not set
# CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT_GOV_CONSERVATIVE is not set
CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_GOV_PERFORMANCE=y
CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_GOV_POWERSAVE=y
CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_GOV_USERSPACE=y
CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_GOV_ONDEMAND=y
CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_GOV_CONSERVATIVE=y

Edit:
The red driver shouldnt be set, ill fix my kernel _________________ ~x86

I went through your kernel, and did some tweaking. I also cleared some drivers that weren't needed, and so on. Here is the result.
Blessed be!

Haha thanks pappy. But it appears your config doesn't work because im on an x86_65 system and booting throws a lot of errors. O well. Regardless, i guess im just gonna call this a kernel bug unless someone else has any ideas? Thanks for the help though guys. |

Run make oldconfig on it, that will set it up for the 64 bit environment.
Blessed be!

nvm I think i found something:
Code: | BurningIce phoenix # modprobe acpi_cpufreq

here's the dmesg output

You have some old object code messing with things. Try doing a make clean.
Blessed be!

Yes.
Follow these instructions carefully. Done wrong, it will nuke your .config. This is safest to do while you are running a different kernel than the one in question. If that's not doable, it will still work. I'll give you the how-to assuming you have only this kernel functional.
1) Move .config from the /usr/src/linux-2.6.25-gentoo-r7 directory to the /usr/src directory.
2) In /usr/src/linux-2.6.25-gentoo-r7, enter "make mrproper".
3) Once make mrproper is done, move .config back to /usr/src/linux-2.6.25-gentoo-r7.
4) Enter "make" in /usr/src/linux-2.6.25-gentoo-r7
5) Delete the /lib/modules/2.6.25-gentoo-r7 directory
6) Enter "make modules_install" in /usr/src/linux-2.6.25-gentoo-r7.
7) Reboot.
This returns the kernel source to its pristine state, and allows you to make a completely clean kernel. I use it every time I reconfigure or recompile my kernels.
Blessed be!

Thanks for all the help pappy. Yep i guess now i have a really streamlined kernel As far as cpufreq scaling, I checked kernel.org and its a bug in that release of the kernel. So I guess i'll just have to wait for the next one. Thanks for everything though |

actually now i cant remember properly what went wrong on my last kernel upgrade but there were couple errors...en now i masked everything later than 2.6.24-r8..ill stick to this kernel for a while now.You could also try the same, instead of waiting...
put this en you should be fine, all new version will be blocked en not mentioned in ur upgrades until the day u feel like upgrading kernel
Code: | echo ">sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.25" >> /etc/portage/package.mask |
P:S
I have lots of other stuffs to do this summer, en no special reasons for kernel upgrades...now i can live happily ever after

A kernel bug. That figures.
I'd suggest trying the .26 family, but I'm not sure if you do unstable or not. It might be worth it just to find a kernel that will allow your system to work as you desire.
Blessed be!

hi all!
i have installed 2.6.25-gentoo-r7 on an amd64 and for me it looks like cpu frequency scaling is working. but i got another problem with irqblance not working so it might be the same kind of bug like yours.
thx for the info to mask 2.6.25-r7...
greets

This isn't a kernel bug. The latest cpufrequtils available in portage does not work with kernel >=2.6.25. You can get a newer cpufrequtils from my website:
cpufrequtils-004 ebuild
Look at the bottom of the post to download the ebuild and related files. |
