I actually sort of use two programs where irc is concerned -- irssi and screen.
irssi (http://irssi.org) is the actual irc program, but I use screen (in portage but don't know the website for it ;/) so I can run a single instance of irssi and not have to worry about shutting it down and running it again whenever I go to-from computers or consoles/X -- which means if I start an instance of irssi while in X, I can go to console (and kill X) and still have my irssi session running in the background. |

Yea screen is really a great utiliy I use it when i program so when i go to the lab i can login to my computer and up pops my vim. Its also cool cause you can pop open it on more then one computer usefult for debugging with and friend over the phone cause your both looking at the same thing while talking about it. Think I give that a shot gotta love the console |

I use X-Chat when I'm in a GUI, but when I'm at the console you can't go wrong with epic4. Just
Code: | emerge net-irc/epic4 |
and get a hold of the SplitFire script and you're set. |

scap1784 said exactly what I was thinking. I have heard lots of folks talk about it but never used irc....so I should try.
I will give XChat and BitchX a try.....but is there a tutorial on irc out there that talks about commands, rules(common courtesy), etc? |

irssi is a very nice client and great when used together with screen as already mentioned before, but might not be the ideal choice for beginners / people who aren't used to console apps that much (but well, give it a try, it's really great).
xchat (also already mentioned before) is very nice and a bit more graphical
i've got it installed as well, mainly because i already recommendet it to some people who use windows (it's available for windows as well) and i can support them ("and now click this...") running the linux-version |

Yes I agree, xchat is my pick if you like a gui for your late night irc sessions. _________________ This message self destructed a long time ago. |

I use XChat although I'm not a big fan. There are several GUI issues that really are annoying.
Well, when combined with my girlfriend using my PC, they're annoying.
The first is the menu. She managed to somehow detach / remove the menu from the XChat window. I do not know a way to get it back, although admittedly I've not tried very hard.
Also, if you detach a #room tab, there is no way to reattach it that I can find.
Finally, there's no way to have the #room tabs arranged alphabetically. They're strictly in a 'as opened' order. This can be annoying when you accidentally leave one room and then the order you are accustomed to is fubarred.
XChat is nifty, but it's no mirc in terms of usability.
There was another GTK2 one, but I forget what it's called. _________________ Want Free games?

I have tried BitchX and I can actually like it.
But i seem to get lost in some virtual labyrinth, when having multiple channels. _________________ Kristian |

That is exactly what happens to me with console IRC clients
X-Chat is my current favourite in the graphical category. I find that it is quite nice indeed, even providing some features not found without scripts with mIRC. _________________ -sphyko- |

Irssi is a nice, i find it better than BitchX.
About the multiple channels.
In Irssi its alt+<number>, replace the <number> with the number of the channel.
Or you can do ctrl+n or ctrl+p for next or previous channel.

Does Irssi work from console?
(I only have console on my Gentoo, since it is a server not a workstation) _________________ Kristian |

Irssi _only_ works on console (i.e. Text-Mode). It's not an X-Application. In fact there are a lot console-based IRC-Clients: irssi, bitchx, ir2,... _________________ Dort wo schwarzer Rauch aufsteigt, sich alsbald ein Fehler zeigt.
